Yar, you be here: Zulu > Customer Reviews Zulu Customer Reviews (4 - 6 of 42 Reviews)A Great Movie about a Great Story!
A great movie about a great story. The Battle of Isandlwhana (1879) was the British version of Custer's Last Stand. To the surprise of the English-speaking world, an entire regiment of British troops were wiped out by Zulu warriors. In the wake of the battle, some 4,000 Zulus advanced on Rorke's Drift, a tiny mission post held by 97 British soldiers. In another surprise move, the British troops beat back the Zulus. The Victoria Cross is England's version of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and more soldiers won the VC at Rorke's Drift than in any other engagement in British military history (eleven total). This 1964 movie doesn't sentimentalize the story, but tells it plainly and intelligently without a lot of cinematic dressing (although it does have a hell of a soundtrack). Stanley Baker has one of his best roles here as the British officer who takes command. A youthful Michael Caine has his first major role as the second in command. Nigel Greene does a marvelous job as Color Sergeant Bourne. There are many great performances in this film, too many to mention here. Great scenes, great acting, a great story, altogether a great movie! A neglected and many times forgotten gem movie!
Michael Caine became a true star with this tragic incident in which the Zulu warriors committed a massacre in 1879 on a British mission, The battle sequence is breathtaking and the cast was simply formidable. Based on a real life fact. Impressive Film of Men at War
British Colonial soldiers. Britain has spent hundreds of years sending young men in soldier uniforms to just about every corner of the world. Who were these men? What did they think? How did they feel being so far away from home and family? How'd they feel about the horrors of close combat? A few movies like Zulu, Gunga Din, The Four Feathers and Breaker Morant attempt to answer these questions. Zulu is populated with real characters with real personalities. Caine is just about perfect as the wealthy prettyboy officer who acts like he's on a safari hunt vacation until things get serious & he's compelled to show his mettle. All of the acting is excellent and the tension mounts throughout. A must have for any war/action film. Just a note on the complaints about the quality of the dvd. The movie is forty years old and seems to have been shot on a shoestring budget with chacter actors (Stanley Baker & Jack Hawkins), gifted unknowns (Caine) & about 100 "zulu" extras. Also, the vast majority of the film was shot outside and shooting outside is rarely a piece of cake because of dust, rain, heat or any other elements. Consequently, its very possible the production values were never particularly high to begin with.
