Funny!
Ben Stiller stars as Derek Zoolander, a very famous, dimwitted, self-absorbed, yet lovable male model. After his rival, Hansel (Owen Wilson) wins the male model of the year award over him and his roommates die in a freak gasoline accident, Derek comes to the conclusion that there's more to life than being "really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking." He decides he wants to help people and try to be a normal person. He goes back to where he grew up and takes a shot at working with his father as a coal-miner. Needless to say, that doesn't work out. He returns home, only to be unwillingly brainwashed by Jakob Mugatu (SNL's Will Ferrell) and Katinka (Milla Jovovich) to kill the Prime Minister of Maylasia because they're afraid the prices of garments will go higher due to the fact that the PM is trying to get rid of child slavery. Zoolander is packed with cameos by David Duchovny, Lenny Kravitz, Billy Zane, Ralph Lauren and many more and it also stars Ben Stiller's wife Christine Taylor (as reporter Matilda Jeffries) and his father Jerry.
The DVD edition of this is the best because it features some deleted scenes, a music video from the Wiseguys, an interview with Ben Stiller and lots more. I highly recommend picking this hilarious comedy up!
What is this? A centre for ants?.
Ben Stiller not only directs but stars as the dim-witted male model Derek Zoolander. Derek has been top of the fashion world for years with his trademark 'Blue Steel' look. However, there's a new guy on the block called Hansel (Owen Wilson) who starts to steal his thunder. To add to his troubles his friends are all killed in an unfortunate playful gasoline pump incident and he returns to his coal mining family, where he receives a distinctly frosty reception. Chastened he returns to the fashion world where he becomes embroiled in a plot to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia. BUT can dim-witted Derek foil the dastardly bad guys? Will he succeed in building a new school for children who have difficulty reading and writing and other stuff like that? And more importantly can he come up with a new look?
Its pretty tough to satirise a business that is already so clearly loony as the fashion world but Ben Stiller's Zoolander is a pretty successful ninety minute wonderfully stupid chucklefest. Ably supported by Owen Wilson, real-life wife Christine Taylor and real-life Dad Jerry Stiller, Zoolander is implausibly good fun, which is perfectly suited to the DVD format. It's full of excellent set-pieces and comic timing, such as the Walk-Off, Listen To Billy Zane and "What is this a centre for ants?". What's more it boasts some excellent cameos from the likes of Jon Voight (as Derek's coal miner Dad), David Bowie and Billy Zane. All in all this pretty much lives up to being 'The Spinal Tap' of the fashion world. It's really good fun and you may even find yourself trying to perfect your own Blue Steel or Magnum in the mirror afterwards. If you don't like it, probably "you think you're too cool for school. Well here's a newsflash, Walter Kronkite...(extremely long pause)...you're aren't!"
THREE AND A HALF STARS!!
I laughed alot in this movie as it was so hysterically funny. Between the take-offs from other movies, to the "Wham" scene with the roommates, and Derek Zoollander's stupidity, I was continously laughing and have a great time at this movie.
It's about a very dim-witted male model, Derek Zoollander, played with great comedic talent and timing by Ben Stiller. He's programmed by an evil fashion designer, played by Will Ferrell of SNL fame, to assinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Owen Wilson, who I absolutely love in everything I've seen him in, plays Hansel, the new male model and competition for Zoollander. They are both totally stupid but funny at the same time. Are male models really this stupid? I definitely think this movie goes a little over the top with it's comedy, but it's a great vehicle for Stiller and Wilson. There are many cameos by other actors and actresses. David Duchovny, of X-Files, does a cameo of a washed up hand model. You won't recognize him, but his voice gives him away. Now for the romantic interest, which was kind of lame. Christine Taylor, who played Marcia in the Brady Bunch movies, is a reporter, who is trying to help save Zoollander from the evil doings of Ferrells' character.(I can not recall his name) She and Zoollander, who are married in real life, develop into something.
The ending of the movie is what brought my grade to a 3 1/2 stars as opposed to 5 stars. It was very lame, I feel that it could've been better executed. But in a nutshell, I would recommend it for a zany day of laugh filled movie viewing.
While the comedy in this film was extremely zany and over the top, one should just go with the flow and have fun at this movie.
My husband took it way too seriously. I myself was a little disappointed at the ending of it, but all in all, it was a great time at the movies because I haven't laughed that much at one in a long time.
I have been a fan of his since his show, and I like all his movies. I did like this movie alot!!! and other Stiller fans will appreciate it too.
