Clever!
This is an excellent updated version of "The Little Shop Around The Corner" with anonymous penpals using email instead of the letters used in the original with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks,as always, make a great team.
An incredible movie with an incredible DVD fits perfectly.
I want to start this review by saying I LOVED this movie. I think Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are like peanut butter and jelly when it comes to filmmaking. I enjoyed seeing them both in a movie that's much better and much less confusing than "Sleepless In Seattle". And what's better than a movie combining two great actors? A movie with an equally great supporting cast, that's what! Many stars besides Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan shine in this movie, like Parker Posey, Dave Chappelle, and Jean Stapleton. I even liked the way this movie was so incredibly realistic, taking place in New York, and having Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan be seen in actual New York locations, like Zabar's, Grey's Papaya, and Starbucks. Picture being an ordinary New Yorker doing errands, and all of a sudden, you're an extra in a major motion picture! And also, this film has all kinds of elements that can please any moviegoer, like comedy, drama, and romance. And during some portions of the film, I was biting my nails to the bone, like the scene where Joe finds out who his real cyber-pal is.
And what's great about ths movie is that it has an equally great DVD that so perfectly complements this wonderful movie. The picture quality is astounding, the first thing you notice when you start watching the movie is how lush and natural the picture looks, and plus, DVD artifacts, like evidence of pixelation and what not, and regular artifacts, like film grain, are kept to an absolute minimum. I never blink when I'm watching a DVD, so you can imagine I have a trained eye for this stuff. But even an eye as trained as mine will be pleased with the quality of the picture. And plus the sound is just as good as the picture, also. And can you say "extras"? This DVD is packed with 'em! This DVD features two theatrical trailers for the movie, 8 theatrical trailers of other recommended movies: "City Of Angels", "Tin Cup", "Joe vs. The Volcano", "Addicted To Love", "Arthur", "The Bridges Of Madison County" and "Message In A Bottle", and I think there's another one in there, too. Plus this DVD has a "tour" of the upper west side, including a map of it, and for each location, there's a clip featuring footage from the movie that was shot there, and behind-the-scenes footage from filming there, complete with commentary about that location from Nora Ephron and Lauren Shuler-Donner. You can also select feature-length commentary from them as well. And finally, this DVD has the HBO behind-the-scenes special, an alternate music-only track, and the two full-length movies from the '30s and '40s that You've Got Mail was roughly based on: "The Shop Around The Corner" and "In The Good Old Summertime".
So if you like a great movie with a great DVD, see You've Got Mail on DVD.
My Favorite Movie!!
There isn't much more I can say beside the title to this review, I ran across it on TV and fell head over heels for it, it's so modern day, a must see! I also reccomend the soundtrack if you like the movie!!
