Real People FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
You've Got Mail is a surprisingly good movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan who were the perpetrators responsible for the horrendous Sleepless in Seattle. Hanks plays a superbox bookstore magnate named Joe Fox. Fox's company has plopped down a megastore next door to Meg Ryan's character's (Kathleen Kelly) trendy New York children's bookstore that was opened by her mother.

Kelly and Fox are locked in mortal combat over the survival of her store against the behemoth. At the same time they each meet someone online that they find very interesting. What they don't know is that they are each other's mystery person.

The key to this particular movie being better than most in this genre is that it treats the main characters as real people and not some cardboard cutouts whose only purpose is the furtherance of the plot. Most times in these types of movies you never have any doubt as to whether or not the main characters are going to get together. Even though you obviously know that will be the outcome in this one, there is no guarantee that it's going to be an easy transition from heated enemies to even friends.

Meg Ryan is usually a little too sickening sweet for me. I find her typical character naive and too angelic for a real world situation. The exceptions to this have been When Harry Met Sally, Courage under Fire, and this movie. She even gets believably angry in this movie.

Tom Hanks gives his typical five star performance. It's just too bad he doesn't do any more real comedic performances and that he limits himself to roles that are only charming and not funny.

You've Got Mail is a good effort from a tired genre.

A heartwarming story FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
Actually I don't like romantic comedies because of the icing that covers them all but You've Got Mail is a sweet movie with great actors and a cute story. I remember I didn't watch it at the movies when it came out but I got a terrible cold in the fall of 1999 so I had to stay home and my bother rent me this one from the video store. I thought why on earth I would like to watch it but I was wrong - because in the end I liked it and watched it for another 2 times the next 5 days.

The story is a classic one: big fish eats little fish and little fish tries to survive but she can't. In the end little fish falls head-over-heels for big fish and they live happily everafter. What's new then? It's in the title: they know each other very well because they email each other every day but don't know that they're after each other until a certain point in the movie when everything goes crazy... that was fun.

The actors did a wonderful job. Everybody knows that the chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan works well but this time it isn't such a straight line that leads to loving each other than in a previous movie (Sleepless In Seattle). Supporting cast is great, too. Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey and Dave Chapelle are on the same level as Hanks and Ryan.

The movie is a good one because you really don't know till the happy ending what will happen next (you know after all how it is going to end - in this genre happy ending is obligatory). Kudos to the screenplay writers, they did a great job, they managed to create some level of uncertainity so when the movie ends you have a pretty good feeling that the heroes found each other, after all the bad (and good) things. While this isn't the movie of the year it is worth watching anytime you feel down, you are ill, etc... it will cheer you up. And this is why we watch comedies.

It's a Hit!!! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
You've Got Mail is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. Why? It's modern but has all of the elements of the good, old-fashioned classics of the black & white era. Inspired by Jimmy Stewart's movie, The Shop Around the Corner, You've Got Mail brings the same charming story into the 90's while retaining the charm and innocence of the original. Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks are adorable as arch enemies fighting in the book business. Kathleen Kelly, played by Meg Ryan owns the most charming childrens book store you've ever seen, The Shop Around the Corner. Hanks moves in with Fox Books, the big bad discounter who threatens to put The Shop Around the Corner out of business. Many of You've Got Mail's lines are straight from the original movie The Shop Around the Corner. Everything in this movie is charming and cozy, the book stores, their apartments, their personalities. As good as When Harry Met Sally, this one is a keeper!
