Coming-Of-Age???!!!??? Not even close.
I cannot believe people who saw this movie consider it a "coming-of-age" movie. In a coming-of-age story, the protagonists are supposed to LEARN SOMETHING, you know, grow, gain maturity, etc. Nothing of the sort happens in this movie; the boys are just as stupid and vapid at the end as they were at the beginning. I've read another reviewer say "along the way she teaches them how to treat women..." ? It must have taken some seriously spiked kool-aid to come up with an observation like that.
This movie is an essay about 2 totally wasted lives that are doomed to go nowhere. They get "lucky" with a woman who uses them for a few quickies before she dies of cancer. The friends end up hating each other. The end.
Revealing
This movie is a peek into the lives of two boys...we get to watch them for one summer through all of the drama that happens. It's very explicit. Another word I can think of to describe it is "raw." It's funny at times, sexy at times, sad at times, etc. It's just very interesting to sit on the sidelines, watching all of these events that happen one summer shape the lives of two boys, and not be able to affect them in any way.
I would recomend it to anyone who thinks they can stomach the explicit language and sex, and to anyone who is generally interested in boys growing up.
