You May Have My Body, [...] & Boyfriend, But You Are Not Me!
Wish Upon A Star is a 1996 picture featuring Katherine Heigl (Roswell) and Danielle Harris (Halloween 4 & 5). The tween-oriented flick caught my eye at the store one day after recollecting childhood reminiscences of it. I quite enjoyed the movie when I was younger, and I was rightly surprised when I saw it in a cheap DVD bin. After not viewing the picture for a decade, give or take a few years, it still holds up rather well. In fact with a lighthearted narrative and appealing performers, it is a charming movie that is sure to still win viewers' hearts. However, the film somewhat falters with its sugarcoated mentality. At times it even comes off as a little corny.
The direction from Blair Treu is fine. While it is certainly no cinematic perfection, the camera movements are unexpectedly above expectations. Most of the acting is really impressive. Katherine Heigl shines as Alexia. You cannot help but love her, even at her most spiteful moments. I've always enjoyed watching Danielle Harris, since I am a big fan of the Halloween series, and she is just as wonderful as Heigl in portraying the shy Hayley. A likeable score and soundtrack also accompany the movie. Songs like "Heaven" from Moonpools & Caterpillars are relatively effective.
Overall, if you are in the mood for a cute story with a little sap give Wish Upon A Star a chance.
Kind of makes you think...
I love this movie. I caught it by chance about 6 years back on the Disney channel when I was nearly 18 years old. I'd just come back from a short vacation I'd taken to celebrate the fact that I'd be graduating in a few months time. Even though it appeared to be directed toward a slightly younger audience, I decided to leave it on anyway, because the premise with the two sisters, actually reminded me a lot of the behavior that goes on between me and my younger sister (we're two years apart), especially concerning school and boyfriends. It really makes you appreciate what you have, even though you may sometimes wish you were someone else and living that someone else's life. It was just a feel good flick, and rather funny in spots.
