Great performance and direction. Very fair treatment of Oscar Wilde during a period of social upheavel unrecognizable in informed cultures.

Young talents in a small masterpiece
This is the movie where Orlando Bloom got his big break.He has an important,but brief scene,with the brilliant Stephen Fry.It's crucial to the plot,so I won't give it away.Orlando has a bowler hat instead of pointed ears---need I say more?

Ioan Gruffudd,of the Horatio Hornblower series,plays Wilde's first boyfriend.In his first scene,he wears a spectacular fez of questionable taste.Ioan Gruffudd shows his talents.

It's hard to tell who steals the show--the wonderful Stephen Fry,or the handsome Jude Law.This movie should be on any "must see" list.

Brilliant
I am no fan of period pieces, even if I know the story. They tend to lose me in the shuffle of trying to match the times as much as they can. But it was not so with Wilde.

I'm very puzzles as to the negative reviews where they focus their energy on the sexual aspects of Oscar Wilde's life. I hardly hear the same complaints made about movies where the lead is a straight male who courts many, many women and takes them to bed. Certainly if you are not gay and have not been subjected to sex scenes of that nature in any visual fashion before, you might be taken aback, but there were hardly enough scenes of that nature to detract from the overall brilliance of the movie, especially Stephen Fry's performance as Oscar Wilde himself.

Highly recommended.
