When Harry Met Sally
One of the enduring romantic comedies of the 1980s, Rob Reiner's warm, often hilarious movie examines the blurry line between friendship and romance in male-female relations. Crystal and Ryan work surprisingly well together, and there's one classic scene in a deli that alone makes the movie worth seeing. Character actor Bruno Kirby is also a hoot as Crystal's romantically challenged pal. Sharp, knowing script by Nora Ephron. An ideal date movie.
One of the better romantic comedy
Sure it follows the cliche romantic comedy routine but the charecters are so lovable and real and it is almost like you are taking a life journey with them i laughed higly reccomend this
If only all romantic comedies were this good
The thing about the romantic comedy genre is that, with a few exceptions, they are very predictable. What generally happens is you have two people who should be together only don't truly realize it start a relationship, something comes up (a lie, a misunderstanding, an ex, etc) at the midpoint that causes a problem in the relationship only for them to come to the conclusion that yes, they are meant for one another. There are only a few exceptions to this format. But what makes a romantic comedy good is the path that takes us from familiar point to familiar point.
Truly there are only a handful of really great romantic comedies in today's society. This is one of them. The best in my opinion. What is sad is that this movie was made in 1989, 16 years ago. And in that 16 years, in my opinion, no romantic comedy has met it or exceeded it. A lot of comedies have taken cues from it (A Lot Like Love completely steals from it), and some have had portions of When Harry Met Sally's greatness. But I can't think of a single romantic comedy that has equaled this.
About the movie. When Harry Met Sally chronicles the lifes and loves of Harry and Sally who meet each other on a rocky condition driving to New York. The story then stops at various parts of their lives, showing how they intersect and their relationship keeps blooming. It's heartfelt and meaningful; it shows us how people can change over the years and how even love can blossom among friends. Interspersed through their story are quick interviews with elderly couples who discuss how they met. Each of their interviews is touching and make you smile. You can just imagine Harry and Sally 40 years down the line saying the same thing.
The acting is wonderful overall. Meg Ryan uses her cutsy persona, of course, and Billy Crystal's comedic timing pays off well. I smiled and laughed a lot at Meg Ryan's character who is a perfectionist when it comes to ordering food.
With the acting comes the writing and directing, another exceptional area. How Nora Ephron can go from being on the top of the romantic comedy world to writing Bewitched (a cutsy, but not great comedy) is beyond me. In this movie she writes very sharp characters and dialogue, and the scenarios are pitch perfect. She makes some great comments about both sexes and her story, while using some of the cliches of romantic comedies, never comes across as cliche. And Rob Reiner once again directs wonderfully.
Truth be told, I am not the prime demographic for this genre of movies. I'm not a huge romantic comedy fan; generally, I find their predictable plots boring or eye-rollingly cliched. Then I come across a gem like When Harry Met Sally (a movie I have just seen 16 years after it was made) and I realize why these movies can be good. They show that yes you can find love in the world, that there is someone out there for you. And that two completely opposite people can become friends and fall in love. In today's crazy world, that's a pretty damn good message, don't you think?
