Rob Reiner Hits a Home Run!
This is one of the greatest films of all time. Writer Nora Ephron's dialogue is brilliantly witty. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are perfectly, hilariously mismatched, and their respective best same-sex friends are played to perfection by baffled Bruno Kirby and angst-ridden Carrie Fisher ("You're right, you're right, I know you're right".) O.K., everyone remembers the scene in the diner, but what about the wagon wheel table, or the fight at the wedding (Sally, exasperated: "Is one of us supposed to be a dog in this scenario?" Harry, deadpan:"Yes." Sally "Who?" Harry "You.") This movie is absolutely crammed with fast-paced, funny dialogue, great music and keen insight on the dynamics of friendship and romance. Great job, Mr. Reiner.
Can Men And Women Be Friends Without Falling in Love?
When Harry Met Sally is the "Casablanca" of all romantic comedies. It is a film that you get involved in, in a good way. There is more laughs than there is serious moments but it isn't overdone. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal are unusually good as a paired up onscreen couple. They have very good chemistry. Carrie Fisher gives a very funny performance as the "be cool" friend of Sally Albright. The movie is not unlikable in any sense. The best scene is of coarse the unforgettable deli scene. It is probably the funniest film sequence in all of film. Rob Reiner and Norah Effron did a great job writing the film. It really is true to life. I highly reccomend this film.
A "New" Classic
This is one of my favorite movies. I never get tired of watching it and have to actually remind myself to let some time pass before I watch it again. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are perfect together. I agree with another reviewer that they are better together than Meg with Tom Hanks (although I very much liked Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail). I wonder why Billy and Meg haven't made another movie together? Yes, the diner scene is BY FAR one of the funniest scenes of all time. No matter how many times I've seen it, I always ROAR with laughter as much as I did the first time. But another great scene is the wagon wheel coffee table argument! I love to quote the line "this stupid, Roy Rogers, wagon wheel, garage sale coffee table!" A CLASSIC.
