"Open your eyes."
I went to see "Vanilla Sky" having very little foreknowledge about the film. What I discovered was an intriguing and consistently watchable film that is an odd blend of psychosexual thriller, crime mystery, and science fiction tale. Sound weird? It is.
Cameron Crowe directs a fine cast led by Tom Cruise. Cruise plays David, a man who has inherited a publishing empire from his late father. With his wealth and good looks, David seems to be living a charmed life. But this life turns into a horrific nightmare. Also in the cast are Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Jason Lee. Kurt Russell is particularly impressive as a psychiatrist seeking the truth behind David's ordeal.
I won't give away the many bizarre twists which the plot takes. The film is surreal and disorienting. Cruise impressed me in the title role. Initially quite unlikable as the obnoxious David, Cruise ultimately brings a real depth and intensity to his performance.
"Vanilla Sky" seems to be having a polarizing effect on a lot of viewers, but I found it to be a compelling film. Give it a try if you feel like something offbeat.

I seriously cannot understand why this movie is being slammed (...). Forget everything you've seen or heard and rest assured that "Vanilla Sky" is nothing short of mind-blowing. This remake of 1997's "Abre Los Ojos" (Open Your Eyes) is brilliant simply because director Cameron Crowe does not mess with the plot. Most of the lines and situations in "Vanilla Sky" are taken almost word for word out of the original. Even Penelope Cruz reprised her role as "Sofia". Cameron Crowe does throw in a few of his signature touches into the mix including his love for music. "Vanilla Sky" also doesn't fall short in sheer star power either. Mega-Watt star Tom Cruise gives one incredible performance as David, a man who has everything and suddenly loses it all piece by piece, including his face... literally. Kudos to the makeup department on this one, they actually succeed in making the ultimate pretty boy into a horribly disfigured presence. Cameron Diaz is captivating as Julie, the woman who sends David's life into a spiraling nightmare. She managed to truly scare me. All in all, "Vanilla Sky" improves on its predecessor. If you are a fan of surprise endings this is one that you can't miss.
One of Cruise`s Best Roles.
A Wealthy Publishing Tycoon:David Aames (Tom Curise) is a Successful, Handsome Man in his early thirties. David is a man, who seems to have it all-what is heart desires but there`s still something missing in his life. When he falls in love one night with the woman of his dreams (Penélope Cruz), which David`s life seems now completed in his charmed life but the next day, his life changed-when his jealous lover (Cameron Diaz) takes a car ride with David & they ended up in a horrible Car Crash. His lover dies and he survived but then that fateful encounter that turns David`s life and face into a horribly disfigured man. Then David seems stuck with his life into a surrealistic nightmare interwaves between Dreams & Reality.
Directed by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, Say Anything) made a unique, One of a Kind film. Which is a actually remake of Alejandro Amenabar`s Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes). Cruise gives outstanding performance in this film, also Kurt Russell as his Pyschiarist and Diaz offers Terrific Performances. Cruz replays the Role of the Original Amenabar`s Version. This film offers One of Cruise`s Best Roles. The Cast, Including:Jason Lee, Noah Taylor, Timothy Spall & Tilda Swinton offers Change of Pace roles. Crowe`s direction is sharp, which is very hard to Compare to Amenabar`s Version to Crowe`s. DVD`s has an fine anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer and an strong-Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD has interesting Commentary Track by the Director:Crowe, His Wife:Nancy Wilson with a few guess apperences. DVD has also Two Featurettes, a Music Video, a Hidden Feature & More. The Performances, Visual Style, Storytelling, Music & Crowe`s directing are the Highlight of this Ambitious/Sci-Fi/Romance/Drama. Judge It for yourself. Written by the Director from a Screenplay by Alejandro Amenabar & Mated Gil. Grade:A-.
