Meh
Vanilla Sky is an interesting remake of Abre los ojos. I can't say that it's better though.
Tom cruise's acting is meh. Cameron Diaz is Meh. Penelope cruz did her role better in the original.
Overall the film seems to work better than the original in the music department. The scene where tom leaves penelope's apartment right before the car accident and you hear jeff buckley's last goodbye is simply irresistible!
Also the scene when tom walks into the club and you see people dancing to thievery corporation's Indra track is very cool.
And at the end when you hear Sigur ros is just unforgettable!
Other than that, the film is inferior to the original.
Perhaps it being set in NYC made it more appealing but whatever.
A Psychological Futuristic Thriller!!
By far one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. This thing has danger, confusion, action, drama, despair, hope, and romance all balled up into one. Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz are all excellently cast for their characters in this film.
Tom Cruise stars as David Ames, a womanizing playboy who finds romantic redemption when he falls in love with his best friend's girlfriend Sofia (Penelope Cruz, reprising her role from the original film). Before that relationship can begin, however, David is coaxed into a car driven by an ex-lover, Julie (Cameron Diaz), who turns out to be suicidal....
Driving her car off a bridge, Julie kills herself and horribly disfigures David. Reconstructive surgery and the loving support of Sofia seem to reverse David's luck, but eerie incidents are soon making him question the reality of his existence and his control over his life, even while he is suspected of complicity in Julie's death. Vanilla Sky ingrains our pop culture of Rock Music and Art into a futuristic landscape that we may someday recognize. Oh, to dream a dream! Dream of a Vanilla Sky...
Cruise was good, but the plot was too tangled to unwind
Not bad, but not anything groundbreaking either. Even though Cruise was good, and the movie seemed like it was going to turn out decent, it was droll and centered more on Cruise doing his thing with his girlfriend(s) more than anything else. The ending was hard to figure out also, did he take reality or just the dream world?
On the whole, the movie led up to something, but never really seemed to capture it altogether. It was as if Cameron Crowe had a good idea what he wanted, but didn't know how to make it seem presentable.
Good for Cruise fans, but for those that like me that just watch him just because, it might not be a good idea to view this film. Unless you have two hours to kill.
