Uptown Girls Reviews

Lots to love, lots to puzzle over FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I won't go into the synopsis of the movie, because others on this forum already have.

I came prepared to love this movie, because I'm such a Brittany Murphy fan. I ended up with mixed emotions about the film, and here's why:

What I loved...
Brittany Murphy turned in a solid performance as the lost woman-child. For every role I've seen her in (TV's "The Torkleson's", and the movies "Clueless", "Don't Say a Word", and "Just Married") she brings something different to the table. She definitely isn't a one-note actress. It's been fun to watch her grow.
Dakota Fanning was an unexpected delight. She seemed perfect for the wise-beyond-her-years child. I look forward to seeing more from her in the future.
The basic story was very good, and fairly unique. From the ads I had seen on TV I knew exactly what was going to happen, but it was still fun to watch it unfold on the screen. Also, I had the mistaken impression it was going to be a goofy, fun romp, and it turned out to have a much more serious side.
Gotta love that pig!
The quality of the picture and sound was great.

What I didn't like about the movie...
They didn't spend enough time setting up characters. I wasn't invested in anyone in the movie except the Brittany and Dakota characters.
I didn't buy her relationship with the singer. It seemed way too casual a relationship for it to devastate her when it didn't work out.
I didn't get a good feel for how close she was with her best friend, and the same could be said for her friendship with the guy from Scrubs.
I didn't get a solid feel for the Heather Locklear character.
I didn't get a solid feel for Dakota's dad.
I didn't buy the singer being so moved by her that he would buy her father's guitar collection.
They should have kept the deleted scenes in the movie. They weren't very long, and would have given you a bit more feel for the characters. However, even that wouldn't have totally solved the problem. I was just left with a feeling of "who were all these people in this movie, and why do we care about them??"

Bottom line, the star performances were good, but I'd recommend renting this one rather than buying it.

Great Everything In One Movie! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
This movie was great! It had a little bit of everything in it!!! It had romance, comedy, drama, and a life lesson in it. I am 13 and watched it with my 39 year old mom and we both loved it! It is the best movie EVER. My dad didn't like it, but he doesn't like chick flicks! LOL! <br /> THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
