Torn Curtain Reviews

A good movie, entertaining and formulaic Hitchcock FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
If there is such thing as an average Hitchcock movie, then this would fit the bill.

Paul Newman and Julie Andrews play their parts with great chemistry. It is too bad that they didn't work with each other again. Newman plays a top US government physicist and Andrews playing his assistant and love interest.

On a conference to Copenhagen, Newman tells Andrews, whom Newman is to marry, that he is leaving to speak to a friend in Stockholm for a few days. However, Andrews follows him to East Berlin, where Andrews finds that Newman intends to defect or dcoes he?

The movie is a bit of a departure for Hitchcock, in that the movie seems to be a bit of James Bond, without the cartoonich aspects of those films. However, the film certainly captures the Cold War and the popularity of spy films of the mid-1960's.

If your a Hitchcock fan, the you might ask what the McGuffin is. Here it is - a formula of some type for stopping nuclear war. Of course, who cares?. The McGuffin is the trick not the subject.

Here, the film is actually suspenseful as Newman and Andrews actually seek to get out of East Berlin. Though perhaps not as compelling as Hitchcock classics such as North By Northwest, Psycho, or others, the film nonetheless has a lot to recommend for it.

Some have mentioned here that the fim has some unbelievable elements. I would disagree, The film itself does not set out to be world-shattering. It is simply a fun exercise. Beautiful scenery, an exciting chase, intrigue, gorgeous people, a Hitchcock sighting, good music - what else would you be looking for in a film.

Having really never seen too many Paul Newman or Julie Andrews films, I'll be sure to watch more from now on.

As for criticisms, my only one is that having been to Communist Berlin, I can only say that this film makes the place look too nice. I saw a depressing dreary place!!!

In short, I would recommmend the movie as a pleasant diversion!!

A curious psycho-espionage film! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
The master of the suspense gave his first slip with this existential espionage picture that does not get to move or commit the viewer. Its coldness narrative, the narrowness of its scope, and its impressive slow paced rhythm constituted the first signal of conceptual fatigue and lack of major ambitions. Maybe it was extremely dated even for the age it was made. A true disappointment considering the stature of his director.
