They Looked Away Reviews
Bold look at a controversial topic
Ever since I first learned about the Holocaust, I've often wondered why the Allies didn't make any serious attempts to try to help the suffering Jewish people during the war. This bold documentary presents concrete evidence that many will find shocking: as early as 1942 the Allied high command knew about the concentration camps, the gas chambers, the mass shootings, etc. and yet they took no action to destroy these death camps. In the last year of the war in Europe Allied bombers frequently flew combat missions near Auschwitz, yet they had strict orders to NOT bomb any part of the camps, not even the crematoriums or gas chambers!
This documentary has interviews with Holocaust survivors as well as air force veterans that continually say,"We could've done it" in reference to bombing the death camps. Of course they COULD'VE, but the fact remains that they didn't, so it's merely frustrating to see interview after interview with veterans and "experts" saying the same thing, when it's too late to make any difference. Also, the overly-melodramatic music was very annoying and totally unnecessary, as the shocking evidence was dramatic enough on its own. Still, I think this film is well worth watching if you want to learn more about this dark period in Europe's history.
