Hats off to the Farrelly brothers. These guys can take off-colored humor, outrageous sight gags, sophomoric gimmicks, recycled comedy, a hopelessly nerdy leading man (Ben Stiller), and still put together a very funny movie. THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY is pure tongue-in-cheek, towel-popping comedic bliss that makes fun of anything and everything--and offers no apologies.

This movie is a celebration of in-your-face sight gags: a johnson caught in a zipper, a petrified dog revived by an electric jolt, a dash of "all natural" hair gel. The visual comedy assaults you, wave after wave, and never lets up. It's comedy you would expect to find in the third stall of the locker room, comedy so off-the-wall and immature you can't believe the sound of your own laughter.

Matt Dillon surprised me; this actor can flat out play a humorous role. Cameron Diaz is perfect as Mary, the title character, while Ben Stiller is just. . .Ben Stiller. While THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY doesn't break new comedic ground, it darn sure enhances the genre. Granted, some of the stuff was lame, but I'm game.

SOMETHING ABOUT MARY is an uproarious comedy that doesn't apologize for itself. Directed by the Farrelly Brothers, Peter and Bobby, the film follows in the grand tradition of AIRPLANE, or the brother's own DUMB AND DUMBER. Ted (Ben Stiller) has been in love with Mary (Cameron Diaz) since High School. At the urging of a pal (Chris Elliot), Ted decides to hire a Private Investigator named Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to track her down so that he can visit her. Problems arise, when Pat finds her and falls in love with her, himself. Often criticized for its lewd and crude humor, ...MARY works because of the fact that the film takes humorous aim at many things. People and situations that are usally considered off limits, take it sqaure in the movie. The film is concerned only with making us laugh. It wouldn't work if it had to worry about being PC. Sometimes, I think folks can get carried away with stuff like that. If you see the film for what it is...you can appreciate that all it really does is make you laugh. Stiller is great as the hapless Ted, who can't seem to catch a break. Dillion surprised me with his comedic timing and he pulls off true smarmyness as Healy. Diaz plays it straight as the film's center, while at the same time, winking at the audience the entire time.

The extras on the DVD are pretty solid. The commentary track with the director's, is at times, as funny as the film itself. The outtake reel offers a few laughs too. There's also a music video from the soundtrack, and a sing-along Karaoke style with cast and crew. Finally, as you might expect, there is of course, the theatrical trailer. **** and a half stars and recommended
