This Film Hasn't Aged Well
When I first saw this film as a college student I thought it was ok, but not great. Now that I've seen it for the second time, I don't even think it is ok. I guess when I was younger, I either missed or wasn't so bothered by the way Robert Redford's character treats Barbara Streisand's, not to mention the way he treats his daughter. He just leaves Katie right at the point when he finds out she's pregnant with his child. And at the end of the movie it appears that he has never kept in touch with either of them. This bothered me to the point where I just couldn't have any sympathy or any positive views about Redford's character and, without this, the movie doesn't work at all.
Disappointed with the lack of emotion in this film.
When I saw the plot somewhere of The Way We Were, I thought that would be a gorgeous story and make a beautiful film. Many people have college loves and would enjoy meeting them in the future, if only to remember when we were young and innocent and in love. Once upon a time I was like Kate, and I loved a boy who was also a writer, like myself.
Sadly, this film lacks emotion. Perhaps if a woman had written and directed it, there might have been more connection between Kate and Hubble. Personally I felt like they never felt very passionate about each other. Sure, he liked her because she was outgoing and not a decoration like his college sweetheart and her friends. Kate liked Hubble's all American good looks. But they never had any passion. They never seemed to be talking together about anything!
They never shared anything to make a lasting relationship. I guess that's why they broke up in the end. Perhaps the message was not only that they were too different, but they really had no substance to be together. It was all illusion.
