The Trouble With Harry Reviews

Very entertaining, but ended too abruptly FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Three-fourths of the way through this movie, I thought it looked like a charming and delightfully unique comedy, well on it's way to at least a 4-star rating. The acting was excellent and the dialogue hilarious! But then it ended rather abruptly with many loose ends left open, which accounts for my 3-star rating. I still found it entertaining, but the ending was obviously disappointing.

A Dark Comedy on a Bright Day FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
If you don't enjoy or understand Dark Comedy, then `The Trouble with Harry' will not appeal to you. It will seem like an inane, contrived comedy of errors. So if The Ladykillers, Prizzi's Honor, and films of that ilk are not your cup of tea, give this flick a pass.

Otherwise, get this classic and watch it over and over. `Trouble' is a novel departure for Hitchcock as it is not a mystery or suspense film. There's no surprise ending and no terror. Instead, the film revolves around Harry, a corpse found dead in a New England meadow on a glorious fall day.

Almost everyone in the village turns out to have some odd connection to the late Harry. As various theories about his demise ensue, the poor fellow just can't rest in peace. In classic dark comedy repeat-sequencing, he's buried and exhumed, often.

The deliberate contrast between dark death and bright color makes this film a hoot as does the ironically buoyant Bernard Hermann soundtrack. The casting of Edmund Gwynn, John Forsythe, Mildred Natwick and Shirley MacLaine as the cliché population of New England hamlet 'Cranky Yankees' is also well done.

For an offbeat slant on Hitchcock and a full dose of the humor that only occasionally pervades his other films, `Harry' is well worth digging up!
