ART FORMS COLLIDE
There isn't a word for the art that is `The Third Man'.
It is a film, certainly, but it is so much more than a mere movie. 'The Third Man' is where Shakespeare, opera, the novel, poetry, pulp fiction, fine art and music all collide.
They say you can see the hand of an auteur behind a great movie. But I defy you to identify a single auteur behind 'The Third Man'. Krasker? Reed? Karas? Greene? Korda? So it isn't a movie then.
'The Third Man' is probably closest to opera. But it would have to be several operas. Dozens maybe. `The Third Man' is like wandering through the Louvre, Met and National. It is the combined fiction departments of Blackwells, Foyles and Waterstones. It is a Viennese lifetime of symphonies. And an infinite poem that begins where it ends.
No-one connected with it came close to doing anything as good ever again. No-one had ever done anything like it before, including, in my opinion, Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles' contribution to `Kane'.
You can stand today in Josephplatz and touch the statues outside Harry Lime's apartment and hope to be moved by the magic. But there is nothing; just cold stone, tourists and traffic.
And therein lies the confirmation of its status as art.
