"Wouldn't you eventually get used to it like a hot tub?"
As a big Simpsons fan, I am very happy entire seasons are coming out on DVD and I will no longer have to dig through my video tapes searching for that one episode I crave. Watching these second season episodes, however, makes me realize how much better this series will get. Some of these episodes are sugary sweet. They make gentle fun at society without the biting sarcasm of later shows that made this series the best on television. Marge is almost insipid in the way she makes Homer feel better about himself. Only in episodes like "Dead Putting Society" does Homer's dopey sarcasm come through ("Remember what Vince Lombardi said, if you lose, you're out of the family!"). In the first two seasons he usually was the dim but well-meaning father trying to provide a better life for his family and, let's face it, that is not as entertaining as the bumbling idiot of later seasons. Lisa's self-righteousness is more moralistic than political in the earlier episodes. The Lisa who would emphatically deride the winged "angel" skeleton she found during an archeological excavation would not take the religious line Lisa did in "Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment." And who is more entertaining: corrupt womanizing Mayor Diamond Joe Quimby with the Kennedy accent or sickening sweet Governor Mary Bailey from "Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish"? Still, there are some excellent shows on this set ("Bart the Daredevil," "Itchy and Scratchy vs. Marge," "The Way We Was" which shows Marge and Homer in high school, "Three Men and a Comic Book," etc.) but one can really see how the Simpsons characters changed since these earlier episodes. The best is yet to come. Anyway, here are the episodes to season 2:
Bart Gets An F: Bart will get used to this like a hot tub, too. I like that, even when Bart studies, he still can't pull a passing grade out of his, er, shorts.
Simpson and Delilah: Homer commits a little company insurance fraud to pay for a hair growth tonic. The character Karl (not Lenny's friend) is one of the sickening sweet characters found in early episodes.
Treehouse of Horror: Aliens abduct the Simpsons (they need to use two vacuum forces to lift Homer to their spaceship) and the Raven is spoofed.
Two Cars in Every Garage...: Mr. Burns runs for mayor so he can twist environmental laws to better serve his nuclear plant. The infamous three-eyed fish makes an appearance.
Dancin' Homer: Homer becomes a mascot for the Springfield baseball team.
Dead Putting Society: One of the better ones. Bart and Todd go head-to-head in miniature golf with their fathers' pride (and their mothers' dresses) on the line.
Bart vs. Thanksgiving: Bart destroys Lisa's Thanksgiving centerpiece and, when he is punished, runs away from home and spends Thanksgiving at a homeless shelter.
Bart the Daredevil: Another good one. Bart emulates his hero & Ebel Knievel knock-off Lance Murdock.
Itchy & Scratchy & Marge: Marge takes on cartoon violence.
Bart Gets Hit By a Car: And the driver of the car is Mr. Burns. Homer hopes that exaggerating Bart's injuries will lead to a big settlement if only Marge can play along.
One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish: Homer is told he only has 24 hours to live after eating a fatal piece of sushi.
The Way We Was: This episode is so good I can't believe it came from the 2nd season. Marge and Homer relive their high school days. The infamous Artie Ziff is introduced.
Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment: Lisa has a moral dilemma when Homer steals cable. Introduces Mike Tyson-take-off Drederick Tatum. When it is shown on a pre-fight feature that Tatum spent time in Springfield Penitentiary, Barney exclaims: "All right a local boy!"
Principal Charming: Selma is hoping to find love when she meets Principal Skinner, only to find he has fallen in love with Patty.
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou: Homer meets his half brother Herb (voiced by Danny DeVito) and ruins his car company.
Bart's Dog Gets an F: Marge and Homer will not keep Santa's Little Helper until he passes obedience school. Unfortunately, the dog emulates his best friend Bart.
Old Money: Grampa's girlfriend Bea dies and leaves him $100,000.
Brush With Greatness: Another good one. Marge, who recently re-discovered her artistic talents, is hired to find the inner beauty of her next subject. Unfortunately the subject is Mr. Burns.
Lisa's Substitute: Lisa falls in love with the substitute teacher.
The War of the Simpsons: The Simpsons' marriage is in trouble when Homer sneaks out of a marriage counseling retreat to fish for the infamous General Sherman.
Three Men and a Coimic Book: Bart, Milhouse, and Martin pool their money to buy the first issue of Radioactive Man. Neither trusts the other alone with the comic.
Blood Feud: Mr. Burns needs a blood transfusion and Bart is a match. After his son saves his boss' life, Homer now wants blood (the green, paper variety).
Unrivaled by its animated peers...
Originally a spin-off from a one-minute segment of The Tracy Ullman Show, The Simpsons morphed into the then-burgeoning FOX network's most successful program. As the longest running animated television show in history, and the longest running prime show of any type, The Simpsons is an American treasure - a combination of humor, wit, and satire that examines not just the lives of its eccentric characters, but also the society, culture, and world in which we live. Fun for adults and children alike, The Simpsons is a cutting edge television comedy that, like Seinfeld, changed the television landscape in the 1990's by creating a new genre of TV fun - spawning large network investments in new series such as King of the Hill, Futurama, and The Family Guy.
Like all new things which smash the paradigm of life, The Simpsons is unrivaled by its knockoffs, and the show doesn't show signs of slowing down. If you haven't yet visited Springfield, then I definitely recommend that you pick up The Simpsons DVD (Season 1) to catch a glimpse for yourself. You have no idea what you've been missing...
The Simpsons (Season 2) DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which Bart makes a deal with school nerd Martin Prince. Bart will make Martin cool if Martin agrees to tutor Bart into a top-notch student. When Martin reneges on his end of the deal, Bart must pass on his own merit, and his D- earns the respect of Homer and Mrs. Krabappel. In "Treehouse of Horror" (#16), Bart and Lisa take turns telling horror stories in an episode foreshadowing the Simpson Halloween Specials which followed in years to come. Other notable episodes include "Dancin' Homer" in which Homer becomes the local minor league team's mascot and "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge" in which Marge takes on the cartoon violence warping Springfield's youth...
