Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins were perfect
I'll admit, this isn't the scariest movies I have ever seen, but it is still really good. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster definetely did great acting jobs! One of the things that makes it such a classic is because it is not just blood and gore, it is also highly psychological. It's really worth seeing.
A serial killer movie without gore
How well does this flick hold up? Consider that the sequel was an over the top gore fest with no real tension. Much like Hitchcock films, the drama comes out of real tension instead of blood splatters. Hopkins performance is larger than life, but it works for the film. Foster hasn't really created memorable characters, but she can give the appropriate amount of emotional response to make the scenes. Plain good storytelling, a memorable character, and real suspense make for a satisfying movie.
You've Gotta See This
Ask anyone who knows me, I am NOT a fan of horror films. In fact I can only claim to have seen maybe three of them in my life. I simply cannot understand the desire to purposefully scare oneself.
But I made an exception.
After reading so much about this film, I just had to see what all the fuss was about. It did, after all, sweep the Oscars. Why not?
The verdict: it has become one of my favorite movies.
The acting is phenomenal. The direction is perfect. Scripting, wonderful. Everything, perfect. It is not often one comes across a "perfect" film. The so-called horror aspects of the film are so cleverly devised that I was not left scared but rather amazed at the sheer genius of the way each situation was concocted.
Anthony Hopkins is an inspiration. When given good dialogue, as he is here, he sparkles on the screen and pulls it off with such simplicity that you're left wondering if the old guy isn't playing you for a fool. He doesn't even seem conscious of his delivery style, he melts into Lecter so seamlessly that that is the scariest aspect of the film.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, or if you're like me and dislike horror films, don't hesitate a minute. This should be compulsory viewing for the entire population of Earth.
