The Rules of the Game - Criterion Collection Reviews
if noel coward were french, hahaha ...
easily one of the greatest movies ever, a disastrous failure in its premiere for its scathing view of the french on the eve of ww2, and it makes one as uncomfortable today as then. word of warning: do NOT watch this movie with any young rabbits, as there is a hunting scene that will traumatize them (i did not allow the kids to see this one).
Great movie under any conditions, in any age
I first watched this movie years ago (on VHS) because the story sounded good and Virgin had it in stock on a cold winter day. A decade later, I watched it again, in France, with a friend who translated/narrated the film. Felt like seeing it for the first time; lovely again, but more meaningful. Just recently I watched the Criterion DVD version, this time in a screening room with a film critic and other VSM (very smart people). This time it felt like I was seeing someone I knew quite well, but in better lighting and with a history behind us. The film quality is superb and the extras are worth every penny.
From my experience with Rules of the Game, this is what I've concluded: you can watch this film under any conditions, for any reason, and on any level and you will be rewarded. I loved this film when I knew little about Renoir, French manners, European history and filmmaking. Today I know more about all of these, and I love Rules of the Game still/even more.
If you want to watch this film with a better understanding beforehand, read the thoughtful reviews posted here, along with [...] Then sit back and enjoy one of the best films ever made.
