The Rats Reviews

2002?...TV?... Rats?............. Best Killer Rat Movie On Record! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
A colony of genetically mutated rats is making more and more violent forays into the lives of New Yorkers. Department store security head Madchen Amick and exterminator Vincent Spano are on the front lines, determined to stop the assault. The plot and characters are standard- issue TV fare. This is the R-rated version of the film, so you see stuff that won't be showing up on the TV broadcast, and it's pretty obvious what that stuff is: an ear-removal moment, and some laughably gratuitous nudity in the opening minutes. But a lot of the rat effects are gratifyingly revolting, and the climax has to be seen to be believed. Though this isn't saying much, this could well be the best rat movie on record.

Very crisp, nice sound, especially by made-for-TV standards. The mix isn't as powerful as it might be, but a quick turn of the volume knob takes care of that.

The menu is basic, and the only real extra is a "Wild On The Set" featurette showing, in some detail, how the scenes with the rats were shot. There is also a clutch of trailers (Ablaze, From Hell, The Fury, The Omen, Phantom of the Paradise).

Though ordinary in most departments, this little feature scores high marks for its willingness to push TV audiences to the edge of nausea. Well done!

Not bad at all.! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
We are not talking about cinematic masterpiece here , but this is pretty well done of its kind .Set in New York ,it deals with the situation that arises when mutant laboratory rats escape from their habitat and wreak havoc in midtown Manhattan ,especially in an upmarket department store and a local swimming pool .
The opposition is led by a freelance rat catcher ,winningly played by Vincent Spano ,and by the store's General Manager capably despeatched by Madchen Amick .
Rat attacks are well staged -especially the one on a subway train and the swimming pool attack ,and the budget has been well spent in this regard as the rats actually do look pretty realistic
The script is predictable but that is part of its appeal-movies like this are as ritualised and formulaic as such older forms of drama as kabuki or commedia d'ell arte .
Sip a tinnie or two or relax to an enjoyable minor league but professionally done no brainer creature picture .
