The Point Reviews

disapointed FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I remember loving this movie--maybe saw it once or twice in the 70's. We just got the DVD and my husband (who also remembers loving it) both agree it doesn't stand the test of time. The story is interrupted by several songs with "yellow submarine" type trippy cartoon sequences (While we LOVE the "Yellow Submarine" some of the songs and artwork halt the story completley) and then at the end--just when we thought the whole story was about being accepted as you are Oblio grows a point! Instead of internal change, new found awareness and just acceptance for who he was--he physically changed and grew a point so he looked like the people that kicked him out for being different--it dampened the point of the story! Yeah, it's symbolic, but wouldn't it be better if he came back--same round head and everyone embraced him just the same? My kids said it was "OK", but they "probably wouldn't watch it again"--though we all agree the music was great and we will probably be singing "me and my arrow" tomorrow--all in all--wish we hadn't bought the DVD--hate it when those "loved it when I was a kid" things don't hold up. Luckily things like the "Mad Monster Party" and "The Year without a Santa Clause" live up to the memories!

We miss you, Harry! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
Fans of Harry Nilsson (and Ringo too) will enjoy this version of Oblio's adventures in the Pointless Forest. Nostalgic adults can marvel at the trippy dialogue and animation, although a certain one-star reviewer here seems to have taken his grown-up pills to grouse about such things. Very young kids will love Oblio and his dog Arrow, especially as they confront the bigger world and its complexities. The music, of course, is sing-along for the whole family, and the DVD could have been a complete package with the addition of Nilsson's original sountrack. Still a treat, though. A few extras to this barebones presentation -- session pictures, a bio, notes from Ringo, a remixed soundtrack -- would surely make some Nilsson converts. As it is, a cute memento of the trippy Seventies.
