what is wrong with the murkiness of real life? FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Why does hollywood have to be so black and white. Would it not be more interesting to try to understand the ambious nature of conflict. Instead we are treated with a ridiculous pantomime that should only fool a child. Apart from the Slavery issue, there are too many inaccuracies; where are the Scottish and Irish Soldiers in the British ranks - they were the majority in this era. If Mel Gibson could dispatch British troops so easily, why then did the war drag on for nearly a decade. Why is it that counter-insurgency conflicts are so muddy, brutal and full of civil conflct - except for Mels? Grow up and learn to deal with the real nature of war.

Very Good! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!

Great Movie! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I learned a long time ago that if you try to hold Hollywood accountable for historical accuracy, you will be sorely disappointed. If you're looking for a history lesson, pass on this one, but if you are looking for a great action movie coupled with a good storyline, above average acting and directing and a vague look into some of the characters and events of the southern campaigns of the Revolution, THE PATRIOT will not let you down.

Though the movie lacks historical accuracy, it does draw from several different characters and events. For example, Benjamin Martin's (Mel Gibson) character, an ex-guerilla fighter turned semi-pacifist farmer, draws from at least three different characters; Francis Marion, Elijah Clark and Col. Daniel Morgan. The movie also rather loosely depicts the brilliant plan of Col. Morgan's used to soundly defeat the Brits at Cowpens, and those same tactics were later duplicated at Guilford Courthouse. Also in the movie, the British officer, Colonel Tavington is undoubtedly based upon Lt. Col Tarleton, the brutal British Greencoat who had no compunction about burning civilians out of their homes.

If you can watch a movie without being overly critical of it's failure to breech the chasm of fact and fiction, and can simply enjoy the movie for it's entertainment value, then you will love this movie. As is typical in Gibson's movies, the violence is rather graphic, so you may not want the kids to see this one.
