A father, A family
First of all, just because Emmerich directed it does not mean that it will be a kicker. Mel Gibson is a stunning actor who may joke around off set, but when he is on he puts his heart in it. Braveheart was an awsome movie and thus, made me want to see this one. Gibson always puts emotion into his movies, but I think Heath Ledger stole the screen. He put in an excellent performance as Gabriel Martin and fit the part perfect, not to mention the fact that he's a hottie. Ahhhhhhhheeeeemmmmmmm!!! I dont think the movie could have been better with any other actors. At times, I'll admit it was predictable, but it was still well worth the money to see in theatres. The movie proved to me that in War you'll always have someone willing to go overboard. And in this case, Colonel Tavington, a man with no heart who had been at the front lines too long. Benjamin Martin (Gibson) is trying to keep his family together when his son Gabriel (Ledger) joins the Continental army. Of course, what would a modern day movie be like without a little bit of romance. Tavington ends up killing becasue he feels like it and because he thinks every man should die, especially the ones who cross him. The movie touched my heart because I could put myself in the shoes of Ben trying to keep the war from his family, and Gabriel believing in a cause and fighting for it. I didn't think the burning the church was right, but then again niether was the man who did it and I'm sure that during the War there were men who would kill innocent women and children merely because they believed the wives should die same as the rebel husbands. It may not have been competely true, but anyone who gets their history from hollywood special effects needs to learn to read books. Anyone who says it's too gory is wrong, it was bloody at parts, but not as bad as some I've seen. Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger put in an emotional performance. It's well worth the money and the time to see. So what are you still sitting there reading this for, go see it.
A must for your collection.
The filming and realism is fantastic in this movies. You must see the Battle scenes and the costumes. This story takes place in 1776, Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a hero of the Fort Wilderness campaign, now a widower living in South Carolina with seven children to raise on his own, is once again confronted with war in "The Patriot." Mr. Martin believes in the cause, but has had enough of war and killing in his life, and is troubled by the prospect of leaving his children orphans if he must fight again; but as in real life, things happen that change your mind despite your beliefs and he soon realizes that he has no choice other than to join in the conflict. Mr. Gibson does a great job of capturing the inner conflict of a man torn between principle and necessity. He imbues him with the stoicism needed to shoulder responsibility, but also with the human touch required of fatherhood.
Historically, whether or not "The Patriot" is accurate in detail is not really important. It is, after all, one man's story, a dramatization set against the backdrop of this particular conflict. That it conveys a sense of time, place and importance is what matters, and that it does. Film that is at once both intimate and of epic proportions. It is artistically rendered, beautifully photographed, and well acted; I just don't think there's a reasom for missing this film. So go see it today.
A soldiers tale
This time period of American history is a favorite of mine i know a bit about it and how things occured. The Patriot takes place in South Carolina around the time after the french and indian wars and before/during the revolutionary war, its is geared to be of epic proportions with the games of cat and mouse and regimental style combat between the British and the Colonials. Mel Gibson plays a widower with children between the ages of 4 and 17 hise eldest son is a man whp believes in the cause of freedom and is willing to fight and or die for his convictions. Ben Martin (Mel) is a veteran of the french/indian wars and no longer wants to be the warrior, when war comes to his life again there is no choice but to fight. I liked the Patriot alot but i noticed that there are inaccuracies as far as historical content. The Patriot is rather long but worth the time you can sense the emotions those who fought must have felt so long ago. The lesson learned is that tyranny comes in many forms, one must always be on watch of it and resist it. Patriot stirs the patrotic soul in those who know the price of freedom. I would recommend this film to all but the very small.
