The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band Reviews

Disney Goes Political? FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
This is about as political as a Disney film got in the 1960's. The Bower family consists of grandfather Renslor (Walter Brennan), father Calvin (Buddy Ebsen), mother Katie (Janet Blair), and their eight children lead by oldest daughter Alice (Leslie Anne Warren) and son (Kurt Russell). Each of the family members plays a different marching band instrument lead by Grandpa making them The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band.

The Bowers are being courted by Joe Carder (John Davidson) to move to the Dakota Territories and he is in love with Alice. The one thing is that Joe thinks that the family is a good Republican family but only dad is Republican, the rest are Democrats. But they decide to move to Dakota anyway.

When they arrive, they find the town divided between the in power Republicans and the growing Democrats. And grandpa only creates more tensions with his hardcore political beliefs. This creates a bet between him and Joe on who will win the Presidential election. The loser takes the winner on a wheel barrow ride down Main Street.

When Grandpa causes a commotion at the school, Joe has a fight with Alice and spends the rest of the film chasing her. The film ends on election night and all are gathered to cheer the results (remember this was before radio.) This results in a battling musical numbers for each of the candidates. When the popular vote is tallied, Grover Cleveland has the most votes but Harrison wins the electoral college. This causes confusion and of course a fight. In the end, Joe gets Alice and the Dakota's become states.

Watch for Goldie Jeanne Hawn's film debut as the Giggly Girl.

This is one of Disney's final classical musical films with a rousing song score by Richard M and Robert B Sherman of Mary Poppins fame.

DVD EXTAS:
The Family Band Album - 13 minute featurette 35 years after the making of the film Leslie Anne Warren (it's a sin that she still looks fabulous), John Davidson (he didn't hold up as well) and songwriters The Sherman Brothers. This is great to hear everyone reminisces about the other cast members and Walt. Interesting fact is that Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn actually met on this film.

Audio Commentary with Leslie Anne Warren, John Davidson and Richard M Sherman

Great as a child - Better as an adult FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
I saw this movie frequently as a child. I used to sing along with the songs and dance along with the actors. For years i couldn't find it, finally it appeared on amazon, i bought it instantly. After watching it as an adult, i realized that i hadn't grasped the political issues as a child. But at that time it didn't matter; the music was fun, the clothes were interesting, the dancing was amazing, and that was all that mattered to me. Now I appreciate the movie even more. I am quite a picky person (when it comes to movies), and i adore this one. I would recommend it.

SIDE NOTE: This was the last movie Walt Disney had input in; he passed away while the movie was being made.
