The Office - The Complete Second Series Reviews

Dark Comedy Without Relief FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
This is not comedy as it can be understood in any traditional sense. The Office invites its audience to find humor in the dark shadows of the human condition. Dark, because we are witness to the pathetic main character's desperate struggle to find some momentary self-esteem fix through external validation as an escape from the gnawing sense of internal emptiness set upon emotionally annihilating him. The resulting spectacle is indeed funny but it exacts a pound of flesh in return. Watching David Brent's self-eviscerations can at times be about as pleasant as watching the antics of Regan in the Exorcist. In fact there are many points in the episodes where I wished David Brent's head would swivel or spew vomit-just so there could be some merciful relief from the blowtorch intensity of his insufferable boorishness.

Season two succeeds in turning up the intensity from season one by introducing a perfect foil to David Brent's ponderous narcissism: Neil--an attractive man of David's age who will be functioning as David's co-manager and boss, and compared to David, is the picture of well-rounded mental health: comfortably assertive, charmingly witty, charismatic, and efficient. Whatever better angels David might have shown in the first session are now totally eclipsed by raging envy and desperate redoubling of psychotic exhibitionism in reaction to his new competition. A foreboding sense of the coming apocalypse hangs heavy within the first few moments of the opening second season episode. The scenes, as before, are cleverly written and stay with one as archetypes or metaphors of what can be seen in the ordinary daily course of living with others. For this, you have to love the Office. But then, I loved the Exorcist also.

Might as well have a good laugh while the world goes to $%#* FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
The results aren't in quite yet but it looks like the W will get another 4 years to fatten up the richest 1% of Amerikans....what to do? Plop down on the sofa and watch the BBC's "The Office"!!! Disenfranchised or not, a good laugh will make this 4 years goes by quicker! So, yes by all means get this very funny series! If you are a novice to Brit humour (notice the spelling), put on the subtitles--it will save you from endless playbacking. And for the same reason read the enclosed guide that explains some of the more obscure lingo! I found I needed to refer to it often and I used to live in the UK! Seriously, (but hopefully NOT) get "THE OFFICE"...you're going to need a good laugh!
