The Mirror Has Two Faces Reviews
Beautiful Movie for Romantics Everywhere Teaches Vital Lessons!
This movie is perfect for romantics everywhere and offers a very inspirational boost to women and men everywhere who feel that Mr. or Mrs. Right is out of their reach.
I think the character that Jeff Bridges played was marvelous. If you look at it closely you can see that he's a good looking man, but the women that he's previously dated often find him too dull. However, the moment he realizes that sex is the problem in all of his relationships and he moves it to the back burner (as crazy as that may be) it leads him to the right woman.
I think there's a really good message in there for people in reality. His character's ideas were a bit over-the-top but if they were toned down a little, you can see that the moment he didn't put as much emphasis on looks and sex... he met Mrs. Right. That could easily be useful to people in real-life in helping them realize that maybe they are putting too much emphasis on the wrong thing and they may want to check out how they view things to see if they are trying to have their cake and eat it too.
Pretty much what Rose and Gregory had was a courtship in modern time, which can often be a better alternative to dating and can lead a lot of people to the right person (without the risk of sounding too preachy).
I also watched the movie and saw that Gregory was a very good man. He appreciated the right things when it came to Rose. He was a good looking man but he was the type of man that a lot of women would appreciate. The only problem with the women he was dating before he met Rose was that they were too beautiful and selfish to appreciate what a good man he was. Though I'm quite sure it would've been possible to meet beautiful women that weren't selfish... though often it just happened that the women in his league (looks-wise) were just not the type of women to appreciate him.
They were spoiled and had too many options and idolized their own beauty far too much (like Rose's mother--played by Lauren Becall). And of course when you watch the movie... you can get a good look at how women with that attitude can often end up if they aren't careful (by paying attention to Rose's mother's feelings, life, and how she always has to have a compliment about her looks). Women like that are enslaved by their own spoils and priviledges... but eventually that fades with age. And you can see how they try and hold on to it--too afraid to let go. When you watch the movie it will also be easy to see that Rose's sister Claire was also following in her mother's footsteps. Scared to death of not being beautiful anymore and living each moment and weighing it against the attention she received from men. It's quite a sad outlook.
Really I think there's a lot of lessons to learn in this movie and I'm surprised it's criticized by some people. I find the movie utterly beautiful and charming. It's hard to find wonderful men and women in this world these days and to see a wonderful example of one in a movie is very nice. :)
And the thing with someone boring like Gregory is that if they meet the right person, that can be changed. When you meet the right person and they accept you for who you are (like Rose did with him) it's only a matter of time before things like that change for the better if it's the right relationship, because two people who come together like that challenge one another and help one another open up and grow in the right direction. For instance, Gregory says on a dinner date with Rose that he finds dancing rather embarrassing, however at the end if you watch the credits... you'll see that Rose helped him change in that area.
As for Barbara Streisand, reviewers have said that she was using the film as a way to state how beautiful she was and to show off her talents. Well, I disagree with that way of seeing things. I think that's projecting one's biased attitude onto Barbara Streisand.
Just because she chooses to use her talents to create something good doesn't mean she should be ridiculed for it. The reason talents are created is so that we can use them. Now it would just be silly for her to know she can do something great with a project like that and be too afraid to use her talents. It's rather blind to automatically think she's trying to prove something to everyone when it could just easily be Barbara wanting to do something for herself and because she has the skills in general to do it.
This is my personal opinion now, but I don't think Barbara was trying to brag or tell the world she was beautiful at all. What I saw was a woman (Barbara Streisand) who knows that she's not "conventionally" or "typically" beautiful in the usual way using her known physical faults to show and prove to other women that they don't have to be typical or conventionally beautiful to be beautiful to themselves or others.
I thinks it's a bit narrow-minded to automatically assume she's trying to prove anything to anyone ("the world" per se) that she's beautiful. It's just quite possible that she's trying to use her God-given talents to achieve something she believes in. I could be wrong but I don't think she's losing sleep at night worrying about or trying to prove her beauty status to the world as reviewers have said. She seems much too strong of a woman for that, if you ask me.
There were a few points in the movie in which I thought eating carrots/veggies (when she was trying to lose weight) and her metamorphasis as a beautiful woman was a bit over-the-top, but that's my opinion on the movie itself. I think they could've eased up on that message just a little and made it a bit less superficial but it's minor and it's entertainments. It's not going to be perfect. It's just a movie and you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride and the delightful ending that it entails.
Perfect romance through and through. :)
Not widescreen!
I love this movie, but unfortunately, when I ordered it, I did not notice that it was not in widescreen format -- this was truly a disappointment! Nor can I find the widescreen version on Amazon.com. Other than that, I highly recommend the movie for all the reasons so well-stated by previous reviewers!
