The Mask of Zorro Reviews
Zorro: The Next Generation
The Mask of Zorro brings to the screen the story of who else, but the well-known Mexican hero.
The setting is California in the transitional period following Spain's withdrawal from Mexico and Zorro, due to old age, can no longer defend the people against oppression and injustice. Subsequently, he needs to find someone to replace him or else the legend of Zorro will die with him...
The film combines romance, drama, and adventure in such a way that it spells success.
Moreover, the fascinating culture and traditions of pre-union California as well as the historical time period in question are presented very well in the film.
Needless to say, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100%! Their great talent and chemistry clearly shows, thus providing an entertaining film that can be watched over and over again.
The setting, the dialogues, the music and the costumes are all wonderful!
Very well written and very well presented, it is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely put you in a good mood!
Excellent Homage To The Previous Zorro Incarnations While Giving Our Ageless Masked Rider A New Look. Plenty Of Action/Romance.
This new film version of Zorro is an excellent homage to the previous incarnations of the character created by police reporter and pulp writer Johnston McCulley (1883-1958), most notably the 1920 silent film version "The Mark Of Zorro" starring silent screen legend Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. as the legendary masked swordsman, and the New World Zorro TV Series (1990-1993) starring Duncan Regehr. I admit, I grew up watching the New World Zorro and loved the show. Having seen Catherine Zeta-Jones in "The Phantom" (please see my review on it) and recently bought the silent screen version, I was eager to see this new film for myself when this movie came out in theaters. Though I never got the opportunity, I got the film on VHS and then on Special Edition DVD. Special features include a Widescreen presentation, replete with DTS 5.1 Surround Sound, an exclusive documentary which features comments from the cast and crew on the origins and the making of this film, deleted scenes (sans director commentary, which is a minor letdown), the original theatrical trailers, a music video featuring Tina Arena and Marc Anthony and MUCH MORE. The story itself is wonderful, co-written by Ted Eliott and Terry Rossio (two of the geniuses behind Disney's "Aladdin") and starring Academy Award winner Sir Anthony Hopkins ("The Silence Of The Lambs" [Academy Award, 1991] "Howards' End," "The Remains Of The Day,"
"Amistad," "Hannibal," "Red Dragon"), Antonio Banderas ("Desperado," the "SPY KIDS" movies, "Once Upon A Time In Mexico") and Catherine Zeta-Jones (the mini-series "Titanic,"
"The Phantom," "Entrapment") and executive produced by Steven Spielberg ("JAWS," the "Indiana Jones" films, "Schindler's List" [Academy Awards, Best Picture and Best Director 1993]), this film is a hit in the hands of Martin Campbell (the 1995 hit "Goldeneye"). Great performances and terrific extras. Rated PG for action-violence.
