Sinister
At the height of the cold war, those clever communist capture and brainwash a group of US soldiers. Years later, back in the states, their star pupil is a prominent man from a political family. But with a few quick words and a glimpse of a playing card, this decorated solider is nothing but a robot to perform at the whims of his handlers.
One of the all-time great espionage thrillers, "The Manchurian Candidate" is just slightly too sinister to qualify as dark comedy. There are elements of humor here, but mostly it's a chilling look at the science of mind control, and the all-or-nothing nature of the spy game.
Sinatra is masterful as Bennet Marco, a former foot solider now back in the states and demonized by nightmares focusing on a former comrade. That comrade is Laurence Harvey and he's the chosen one, the man with altered memories and a psyche that can be manipulated at the whims of the communists who hatched this plot.
Also stellar in this role is Angela Lansbury, the mother of the mind controlled solider and a decidedly Machiavelian politician bent on putting her husband into the White House.
This is a movie that never slows down while exploring the devious plots that grew from emerging science as the US took on the communists in a game of wits with no rules. The latter half of the movie is replete with the twists and turns we have come to expect from a top notch thriller. And this one may be the father of them all, a brilliant glimpse at cold war evil that may leave you questioning your own thoughts and memories.

We enjoyed this film many years ago and it was just as exciting now as it was years ago. Great acting.
