Classic film, but KEY scene deleted! (thus loses a star)
An absolute classic for all the reasons cited by most reviewers on this page. But I was astonished to see that on this DVD (issued almost ten years ago) a key scene near the end of the film is deleted. A character is falling in slow motion while there is voice-over narration by Michael Caine.
The scene is incredibly powerful and among the most memorable cinema moments I've had. But gone from this print. Evidently still on old VHS versions.
Still a great film.
Reviewed by the man who is King of England
The man who would be king is a wonderful movie. It is directed by the famous John Huston, think Treasur of the Sierra Madre and other great films. As hard as it is to believe I have the support of a 170 moon moonfleet in our solar system as King Brad Morgan-Windsor of England and the American Shadow Vice President. All I have to do is hold Texas and England for the Creator who protects his land with rocket guided Comets from Moonfleet. If you want to to be free people with freedom of speech and freedom of religion then relocate to Texas or England. I ask my Loyal subordinates such as President George W Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blairto mobilize as many military units in Texas and England as possible. Put up a combat air patrol of at least 8 armed fighter jets at least once a day because we have been mocked for having only combat air patrols of 2 over Texas and England respectively. Our two chessquares near the corner may be in for some difficulty from the other guy. Buy Extra food and water and stay indoors if there are abnornal high temperatures of 120 degrees fahrenheit. Have faith in our real Moonfleet of the Creator good people. May God continue to bless Humanity. Thank you to Amazon for supporting freedom of speech like the kind President George W bush and I support.
A FIVE STAR CLASSIC on a 1 STAR DVD
This was one of my favorites, and a "must have" in my DVD library. The story is still great, and the dialog between "Peachy" and "Daniel" is still among my favorites still.
But the DVD was dissappointing. The movie is split on two sides, and has to be flipped to view the remainder of the film. The DVD only has Dolby 1.0 Sound (Digital but MONO)and apparently very weak in the mix. Overall a better picture than my old worn VHS, but very weak audio overall.
The menu's and commentary are hard to read, and there were points in the movie where the transfer to DVD looked "jumpy".
More than disappointing presentation overall.
This deserves a "director's cut", or an audio remix to serve those of us who will cherish whatever copy we have, forever.
