not what is advertised
I never expected this to be the extended version, but I did expect it would be the movie version, which it isn't. This has been edited extensively, probably for TV, more likely to make a buck. Really disappointing, and now, just as the company expects, I have to invest more money in the extended version just to get the sequences that were in the original film. Don't buy this version!
The greatest trilogy ever made.
The Lord of the Rings is easily the greatest trilogy ever made. It really is just one long film, with an amazing sense of continuity due to the fact that it was based upon a book and all filmed at once. ROTK is the best of the films, but all three are nothing short of brilliant and are just part of one long story. An amazing series made with love and attention to detail that should be a part of any film-lover's collection.
undeniable
A casual viewer of the Lord of the Rings movie Trilogy may or may not appreciate what goes into the production of something of this magnitude. The DVD 'appendices' try to explain in what detail they can. All I know is I tip my hat to the exhaustive efforts of all involved in the making the Trilogy, especially Peter Jackson, WETA Workshop and the cast of characters. Lest not we forget one J.R.R. Tolkien in his brilliance, also. I will also admire New Line Cinema for having the confidence to invest in the vision and possibilities that Jackson displayed.
Owning the Trilogy is owning cinematic history. A tale renowned globally, even if it had to be modified for certain movie realities. A few ground-breaking visual effects in some areas(and otherwise all totally seamless). An ensemble cast that made Tolkien's oft-poetic dialog plausible and moving.
I can find few words to justify how grateful that novels of this scope were treated with the respect worthy of its author from the making of this movie.
