Out of this World
This was always one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies of the time, and still is. The special effects of the time were pretty impresive. It wasn't a "Star Wars", but it didn't have that size budget either. It was very entertaining, and that's what it's all about, isn't it? I highly reccommend it if you're into sci-fi, and even if you're not.

Playing video games will get alien civilizations to notice you.
The Last Starfighter marks a milestone in film special effects being the first film to utilize a computer to achieve the great majority of the visual FX shots. They may be quaint now and even dated, but the rousing story, loveable characters and dynamically choreographed action scenes still stand up nicely.

Sci-Fi fans along with video game junkies should love this film for the action and eye candy, while the coming of age theme along with the family angst of the capable lead provides the rest of the audience with plenty to get involved in and enjoy. Besides the groundbreaking computer work, the make-up, costumes and prosthetics used to realize the various alien races are equally impressive. Robert Preston's mischievous alien rogue Centauri provides the film with much comic relief and is a standout performance.

This great disc is chock full of informative extras and is well worth the investment.


only in the 80's
Could you imagine a movie like this getting made today? The concept of an arcade machine being used as a tool by aliens to recruit the best star fighters in the galaxy is probably the most hilarious thing I've heard of. This is why this movie rocks!

Sure, the space battle sfx are pretty bad, but I think that adds to the appeal of the movie. The over-the-top acting/script also helps with the cheesiness too.

If you're looking for a good sci fi movie, you should probably steer away from this movie. But if you're looking for something to laugh at, and have a good time, this is the movie to see.
