Samurai
The title of this movie can be a little confusing. Many people I've spoken to don't want to watch it because they're under the impression that Tom Cruise plays the "last" samurai.
I suppose it can be taken that way, but in this movie Cruise's character is captured during a fight and taken to a samurai village where he is more ignored and laughed at than treated like a slave. He starts to acclimate to where he is, and then submerges himself in the culture. The end of the movie takes a sad turn, with many men dying good deaths.
The way I take the title of the movie is making the word samurai plural. This was about the last of the Samurai, and the start of wars with guns and no honor.
This movie is extremely captivating, it holds ones attention throughout it's entirety, and it has a stellar cast.
Spectacular--A Truly Great Film
This is Tom Cruise at his greatest. The film's tone, mood, action, acting, directing, sets, and scenes (especially the exteriors) were magnificent!!! This is a movie with a heart, and Tom's gradual transformation--from savage soldier to honorable fighter--was refreshing and uplifting. Buy it and keep it. You'll want to see it many times, as each viewing shows you how very much more there is than when you saw it earlier. I can't praise this movie enough, and believe me, I'm a harsh critic, especially when I note something unbelievable and phony. Enjoy!
Great Movie
I'm not a Tom Cruise fan but this movie was very well done. Tom Cruise plays an American civil war era soldier who is hired by the emperor of Japan to train the Japanese army. He is brought to fight against the last of the samarai warriors but when he is captured in the first battle he finds himself slowly becoming one of them.
My favorite part of this movie is not the fighting or the samarai or anything of that sort - its the culture. I love the way this movie portrays the differences between Western and Eastern thought - the differences in thinking, dress, and everyday life.
I'm sure this movie is not historically accurate in everything that it presents but the bonus features do offer a brief historical bit about samarai.
Overall its a great movie, although I'm not sure if it deserves the 5 stars that I'm giving it.
