The Last of the Mohicans - DTS Reviews
The Last of the Mann Movies
This will be my last Michael Mann movie. I know lots of folks like his directing style; he's great visually, puts in plenty of tight action, and some steamy romance besides. But he's too over the top for my taste, and he's not one for authenticity or plausibility. The same holds true for two of his other movies, Miami Vice and Collateral.
Hawkeye, a white man brought up by the Mohicans, is a superhero in this version of the story. His hair and clothes are always impeccable, not to mention his manners and integrity. I lost count of how many times he rescued people, and of course he never so much as received a scratch or mussed his hair in any of his hand-to-hand battles. I don't think he ever missed a shot with his rifle, either, and he could reload it on the run. He runs everywhere but never tires - I think Mann's got him running so much so we can see his long hair flowing behind him and his bare chest heaving. Then there are the anachronisms in the dialogue. In one scene, after an argument with a British officer, Hawkeye says, "I think we're going to have a serious disagreement someday." That's a funny way to express a veiled threat in 1760. The romance consists more of repeatedly rescuing his girlfriend than of wooing her. But inbetween rescues they manage to enjoy some passionate kisses. And finally, the music track is an endlessly repeating cycle of the same twelve bars, sometimes louder, sometimes softer, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, depending on the scene. And the end song is the same, going on for a good ten minutes while the credits are rolling.
Flavor of the times
This is an outstanding movie. Well acted by an excellent cast. The scenery is just fantastic, filmed where it fictionally happened. The history is accurate and the over all film really gives you a flavor of those times. It doesn't pull any punches with the actions of any side. Wes Studi does a particularly good job as does Daniel Day-Lewis.
