The Last House on the Left Reviews

**THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR THE DVD** FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
GREAT EXTRAS! Many people find this movie to be highly disturbing, with extras included! This movie HAS been unrated, in fact, in its first release it didnt even go through the MPAA (it did a while later). The extras include ALL:

*Introduction by Wes Craven
*Audio Commentary bt :Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham
*Outtakes and Dailies
*Forbidden Footage
*Theatrical Traler

The intro DOES claim it is in its full, uncut version, but it IS missing 3 second of a certain part (you will have to find it)...

My two cents on this film FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
(2.5/5 stars) Even though there are some 263 reviews on Amazon as of the writing of this review, I thought I would throw in my own thoughts. Normally I can give my opinion on a movie after I have seen it and explain my reasoning behind it. With "Last House on the Left," I had such an ambivalent feeling afterward it that I am still struggling to come to grips with it, even though I have only watched it once and that was about at least two years ago. In a way, writing this review will help me sort out my own thoughts. If you have watched this film or have read some of the other reviews here, you know it is difficult to watch because of the rape, the gore, humiliation, violence, etc. Usually when I watch a movie, I liked to be entertained; being subjected to the aforementioned acts is not my idea of a good time. I do enjoy horror movies, but I find the scariest horror is that which is unknown. This movie has me re-evaluating and redefining my own definition of "horror." What happens to the young ladies in this film is truly horrific and, from what I understand, left one of them in fact emotionally scarred. With so much talk today of torture (at Abu Ghraib, etc.), grisly war crimes, videotaped beheadings, Geneva Convention principles being purposely and expressly ignored, etc, what else is there to shock us? Have we become so inured to violence that our brains can accept and rationalize anything? I have been an admirer of horror films since I was very young for many reasons, such as the supernatural elements of some, the suspense of others or the good vs. evil conflict in still others. Normally what keeps horror movies in check is a sense that the filmmakers also recognize the atrocity being committed and they attempt to validate it; not so with this movie. I genuinely got the feeling the filmmakers relished torturing and mutilating those women, even if it was not real. Apparently they claimed they made this movie to protest the Vietnam War, which was in progress at the time. I could get behind that justification if it were true. For those who didn't need to be shocked in order to find reason to protest the war, why not show how senseless, grim and utterly repulsive killing another human being is? Yet, I am not so certain I accept the argument that this was a war protest. It seemed as though they had too much fun making the movie and invested too much energy making it seem realistic for that argument to seem plausible. Is it fair to judge a movie (for better or worse) based on the intentions of the filmmakers, or based on the quality of person s/he is? I have enjoyed other Wes Craven movies, such as "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream," though it seemed difficult to believe the same person was responsible for all these films because those movies adhered to the normal Hollywood conventions. While some will undoubtedly see that as an undesirable trait, for me it adds an element of fun. (See Universal monster movies for further examples) Ultimately for me, this film was highly effective at being horrific, and succeeding at its goal of horrifying earns this film 5/5 stars. However, a movie should not be an excruciating experience, as this one undoubtedly was for me. For that, it deserves 0/5 stars, for an average of 2.5/5 stars. One final note: many have used the term "disturbing" to describe this movie, and I agree. To me, "disturbing" and "enjoyable" are mutually exclusive. I'm not certain which is more unsettling, this film or the people who said they actually enjoy watching it.
