when the old gets a face lift FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
rather disturbing title, ain't it? oh well... it fits this movie though... in some ways. thing is, this remake of the 1969 comedy caper bears little resemblance to the original, except of course for the mini coopers, the car chase (kinda) and the characters (also sorta)... *shrugs*

and the "italian" part is well... misleading coz the whole thing took place in los angeles. the first heist though, took place in venice (instead of turin in the original).

enough of that. i love this movie. it's not the same as the original italian job, but what is? the michael caine vehicle is an unbelievable movie and i doubt that anything could ever top that one in it's originality, script and performance in the heist genre. that said, this 2003 remake is far from incompetent and god forbid, mediocre. i's a whole new different ball game, and it's well made with an excellent cast and great directing.

ed norton plays the utterly slimy and oily villain who stole the gold from the team led by croker (wahlberg). in the process, he left them for dead and killed theron's father played by sutherland. they managed to track down norton, now living it up in LA, and it's payback time...

this is really enjoyable. so many heist movies in recent memory failed to live up to their expectations, but even with a tough predecessor (the original italian job) this movie shines as one feel good escapade. some complained about the formulaic plot, but i think it's better to have a formulaic plot and still able to pull it off with great performance, directing and energy. after all, people go to the movies to be entertained.

and you shall...

Mark Wahlberg is SOLID!!! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
While watching this movie, the movie "Italian Job" (with actor Mark Wahlberg in the movie)is really entertaining with having suspense, humor, action, and drama in the movie. It has everything a person wants in a movie. And it's worth watching it with Mark Wahlberg in it. :)
So, if you didn't watch it, grab that tape or DVD and watch it with a love one.
This tape even reminds me of "Mission Impossible".

Double-Cross Burglary, Murder, Revenge, Super Action Caper!! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
If you are a fan of hi-tech action films and love great chase scenes - "The Italian Job" is for you! Make a double batch of popcorn and settle in for a rollicking movie ride! The producers could have lost the script and speaking parts altogether - the action alone, along with the wicked sound track, would make many folks very happy. This tongue-in-cheek, super burglary, double-cross, murder, revenge thriller includes the grandmother and the mother of all chase scenes. There's a wild boat ride through the canals of Venice, and even wilder car chases, with the grand finale roaring through a Los Angeles train station, into tunnels, down stairs, with a wind-up duel between a Mini-Cooper and a helicopter. Charlize Theron looks svelte and sexy behind the wheel! If you are looking for a more cerebral film, then I'd advise you to rent something on the quieter side.

Donald Sutherland is terrific in a cameo as John Bridger, the sage guru among a band of hi-tech thieves plotting to steal millions in gold bullion from a safe in beautiful Venice. (Great photography!!) Bridger's protege, the outfit's mastermind, Charlie Croker, (played by Mark Wahlberg), along with his team, pull-off the heist without a hitch. After a spectacular get-away, the group drinks to success and future plans as wealthy men against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps. Then in the first twist, and there are more twists, turns, hitches and hikes in this one than in any amusement park ride, the evil-doing, back-stabbing, amoral Steve, (Ed Norton), turns on his fellow thieves. He heists the heist, murdering Bridger, and he believes, the rest of his mates.

Fast-forward one year and we find Bridger's daughter Stella, (Charlize Theron), a professional safe and vault technician (read safecracker), still mourning her Dad. Enter Dad's favorite sidekick, Charlie Croker, who proposes a plan for revenge to Stella. She buys in, along with old team members Napster, (Seth Green, who steals scene after scene), Handsome Rob (Jason Statham), and Left Ear (Mos Def) - very funny characters, all! They trek out to LA, where Steve has a new alias, high-end digs, guard dogs and body guards galore...and the GOLD! And they plan their ultimate payback!

I am not going to critique the acting or direction - I don't think this is what the film is about. There is nothing deep or meaningful here. It's just FUN! I am not a fan of action films. Chases, car and other, minimal acting and small plots are not my style - and I liked this movie! So, go know!? I'll take a chance and recommend this, even for highbrows. "The Italian Job" is entertainment that rocks!
