Are you in the mood for action?
Okay, so this film is never going to win any Oscars, and the product placement may irk some. But so what? You have to know what you're going in for...and if you're in the mood for action and a cool heist plot a la Ocean's Eleven or The Thomas Crown Affair (Pierce Brosnan not Steve McQueen), then you'll probably like this one. The plot involves a team of high tech thieves who pull a job (the titular one in Italy) and are betrayed by one of their own who in the process kills the mentor of the gang (Donald Sutherland). So now they have enlisted the mentor's daughter (Charlize Theron) who is a top notch safecracker and are going to pull another job (this one's in Los Angeles) to get revenge on their former partner. The "jobs" are slick in execution, there are some good comedic performances (notably Seth Green), and the climactic car chase with the Minis is great! A very fun and diverting movie.
Thoroughly Enjoyable
Some movies are made for you to think, reasses your life and the things around you. "The Italian Job" is not one of those movies. Instead what you get is a fast paced, funny heist movie that is well directed, well written and well acted.
The set up is easy: after a heist, one of the crew back stabs his friends to steal the gold, killing their mentor in the process. A year later, the rest of the gang return to take what is theirs.
In a movie like this, the setup isn't as imporatnt as the exucution, and director F. Gary Gray and his crew understand that. The heist is well set up, enjoyable, far-fetched but always entertaining.
The cast is all top notch. Mark Wahlburg completes his remake trilogy(the god awful "Planet of the Apes" and the decent "Truth About Charlie") with one of his best performances to date, having a good time. Charlize Theron is excellent as the safe cracker, and the rest of the crew, Mos Def, Jason Stratham and Seth Green, are pitch perfect as the comic relief aspect of the movie. Even Ed Norton, as the villian, who didn't want to do this movie, looks as though he was having a fun time.
"The Italain Job" is not going to change your opinion on anything. It doesn't want to. But as far as enteratinment goes, "The Italian Job" passes with flying colors. A really fun movie.
Mini-coopers rock!
You know don't let the fact that Mark Wahlberg is the leading-man in this movie throw you off, this is a worthy remake of the 1969 classic which starred Michael Caine (even though in a lot of aspects its very different). The story is still somewhat the same though. In Venice, Italy, a team of expert thieves pulls a daring heist of 35 million dollars in bars of gold. One of the thieves betrays his companions and swipes the gold for himself. One year later, in Los Angeles, the surviving team members create a smart and devious plan to steal back the gold and get their revenge on the traitor
I was truly entertained with this movie because it kept on going the entire time, there was never really a break in the action and that is what I liked about it. The scene with the Mini Coopers has to be seen to be believed because it is truly something spectacular.
Jason Statham, Seth Green and Donald Sutherland are all extremely funny in their roles and the constant bickering going on between some of the characters is worth watching the movie alone, truly funny stuff. Whereas some of the other provide more comic relief Charlize Theron, Edward Norton and Wahlberg provide a more serious aspect.
All in all this a movie that will keep you entertained for the entire duration, it has humor, action and everything else you would expect from the sort of movie you simply watch to enjoy yourself, not to think too much. I can recommend this one and can almost assure you that you are going to enjoy it.
