The In Crowd Reviews

"Don't you try to out-bitch me girl." (Hairdresser's quote) FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
This movie is fun to watch. I've never had a problem enjoying movies that weren't on anyone's Top Ten list. This is an entertaining throwaway movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

Susan Ward is cool as the sexy vixen Brittany Foster who takes the "new girl" Adrien under her wing. It's obvious from the beginning Brittany is a lying manipulator, but you still don't quite know what Brittany wants from Adrien. I mean, does she want to destroy her or sleep with her? Well, you find out by the end.

It's a cross between Mulholland Drive, concerning the female to female dynamic, Wild Things with the sexuality, and a little bit of Basic Instinct.(Susan Ward does the Sharon Stone "eyebrow" thing a lot.) Unfortunately, The In Crowd isn't as smart as any of the aforementioned films, but I like it better.

Plus, there's a great trick on how to stop the hiccups in the movie. It really works. For me at least.

The In Crowd starts out as a typical teen film, populated by good looking actors, whose charaters seem like they were plugged into the film's setting from other movies of this type. And then something interesting happened along the way, I ended up having fun watching the movie anyway, much more than I was expecting to or should have.

When Adrien Williams (Lori Heuring) gets a summer job at a country club in New England, she soon finds herself surrounded by rich, beautiful upper-crust college students, and hardly knows what to do. She is befriended by Brittany Foster (Susan Ward) and falls in love with Brittany's tennis pro boyfriend, Matt Curtis (Matthew Settle). But soon after she arrives, Adrien learns that everyone among the high-class clique has secrets to protect.

Written by Caleb Carr and directed by Mary Lambert, the film takes you to some comicly dark places. Anyone who ever saw the movie Gossip should note that while there are certain thematic similarities The In Crowd is much more suspenseful and fun. Lambert does a fine job showcasing the web of lies and manipulation that permeate throughout the movie. She proves that preverse can be good if done right. The cast is very watchable here and does have the feel of each character down to a tee. Think 90210 or Dawson's Creek but a lot more fun.

The fact that the film barely registered at the box Office didn't stop the studio from loading on the extras for the DVD. The screen-specific audio commentary with actors Susan Ward and Lori Heuring, was like the film, somewhat of a suprise. But it Ward and Heuring seem to be having a great time. There is plenty of humor, as well as quite a bit of detail about what went on behind the scenes. I only wish Lambert could have been there too. The usual hum drum gallery of cast bios and film highlights is perked up using short interview clips accessible from each bio. The full frame video clips are a few minutes in length and usually each interviewee focuses on his or her character, their motivations and how much fun it was to play them. There are three deleted scenes, including another ending Like most deleted scenes these add a bit of depth to the characters, but their deletion probably is a good thing. The Publicity Gallery includes the standard theatrical trailer and teaser, as well as four full frame TV spots. There is also a still gallery with publicity stills from the movie. Lastly, there are a number of DVD-ROM features, including additional behind-the-scenes footage with some promotional EPK material, screensaver and wallpaper downloads, and production notes

Taken as a breezy teen thriller, with a spritz of dark comedy, The In Crowd is best enjoyed by going in with the right frame of mind and having fun
