The Ice Storm Reviews

A good movie but depressing FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
All the people in it are upper middle class white people. They seem to me to be bored. Their kids seem to want to either lash out (like Christina Ricci character Wendy) or withdrawal like Mikey (Elijah Wood). The adults seemed bored with life and was looking for excitement like "key parties" (throwing car keys into a fish bowl where women pick them out. A form of "Swinging").

It stuck me as terribly sad. Perhaps our way of life in Western civilization brings about evil. Too comfortable for our own good. Even in the poor parts of our country, we have it good compared to just a couple of hundred years ago. Yet human nature has this inbred part of us that says "more". Maybe it's our curse as well as our gift. To keep striving for more even if we have enough.

Ice Storm is a 1997 motion picture directed by Ang Lee. The movie is adapted from the novel written by, screenwriter, Rick Moody. In spite of widespread critical acclaim upon release, the project was deemed a box office failure with a modest $7.8 million gross; the budget was $18 million.

Having never seen the picture throughout, I am content to say I was finally able to. And I think I can easily say that The Ice Storm is a successful objective glimpse at family relations or, more specifically, the effects of a decaying one. Though the movie does progress at a relaxed pace, you see these characters spiraling out of control and you cannot peel your eyes off the screen.

Ang Lee's direction is penetrating yet tremendously delicate. His arresting exteriors in Connecticut and superb depiction of the early 70s make The Ice Storm visually engrossing. A haunting score is present as well.

It is the cast, however, that draw many viewers to the picture. Seeing the young faces of Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, and Katie Holmes is startling enough, but their performances are just as jaw dropping. Ricci gives an outstanding portrayal of, what one could say, a woman in a young girl's body. Kline and Allen are great, but Allen, in particular, is exceptional.

Overall, I cannot deny that The Ice Storm is an enthralling drama.
