Just want to set the record straight. This is not an adaptation of the book. The television series is based on the radio series; the book was created last and based on the other two. All three are great fun, and this is a must-have for Douglas Adams fans.
I give it 42 stars!

The Radio series was in '78. The first of the books followed in '79.
The TV series premiered in '81 in the UK, and in early '82 in the US.
Not that it matters all that much. They are all a bit different from each other, and each has a charm all its own.
The main difference between the TV and radio versions is that the Radio version is a tad more psychedelic, owing to the rapid fire sound effects and asides. The TV series is a bit less narrative than the radio plays. The cheap "Dr. Who" effects in the TV series detract a bit... Marvin looks pretty cheesy and Zaphod's extra head is a useless lump of plastic. Be that as it may, it is still a fine and enjoyable production.
The new movie is yet different still, and is very enjoyable, but on a different level. If you just saw the movie in the theatres (this was written in May 2005), you should definitely see the TV series and read the books.
decent price for the dvd set.
douglas adam fan 2^276,000 here. great set to own. bought this not too long ago when amazon was having a sale on BBC collections. (paid about $22) quality is decent -- can't expect much since it was filmed during the eighties.
still the series itself is great to watch with a great cast -- Simon Jones, Mark Wing-Davey especially. Must have for fans. However, many scenes are juxtaposed in the TV series since it was filmed after the first 2 books and radio series. I recommend listening to the BBC radio series for would-be avid fans or for pure curiosity. It follows the radio script more closely than it does the book so don't be too alarmed by the sequence of events when watching the DVD if you only have the books as a reference to anything H2G2.
The interviews, outtakes, and extra features on the 2nd dvd are interesting but a bit on the dull side -- especially the outtakes (basically 20 minutes of outtakes regarding ONE particular scene).
however, if you enjoyed reading the book, you'll probably enjoy trying out the DVD.
