The Greatest Show on Earth Reviews
black and white in color
I watched this terrific DVD last night with my family. It was the first time I've seen The Greatest Show on Earth since it was in the theaters. All of the things said by other reviewers are true. It is spectacular, fun to watch and great entertainment in beautiful Technicolor.
But in a significant regard, the film is monochromatic.
A viewer is struck that there is not one black American seen in any audience shot, including wide shots showing hundreds of people. All of the cute, all-American children licking ice cream cones with their all-American moms and dads are white.
There are no black people in any crowd shot. There are no black circus performers and no black people working at the hundreds of other circus jobs that we see in the movie. (The only black people seen in the movie are per diem laborers working to set up the tent at one of the circus venues.)
The Greatest Show on Earth is a wonderful movie. But it is also a very clear representation of how recently black Americans were excluded from civil society and, of course, from Hollywood.
The greatest film on earth about circus
If you are over 50, you will remember the circus of your childhood: clows, animals, trapeze. Cirque du Soleil is polically correct and beatiful, but the "old" circus were a real show for the eyes. Buy this dvd as a proof of what a circus was at "our time" and show to your children or grandchildren. They will, for sure, love it!
