The Glenn Miller Story Reviews
Really bad
A really bad movie. Jimmy Stewart plays a very inconsiderate guy who calls his girlfriend once in two years and doesnt tell her when he's showing up, ends up there in the middle of the night. Every step of the way he acts inconsiderately. The script is corny and bad. Nostalgia be damned, you have to give me a good movie. This is hard to sit through. Utter nonsense.
Stewart is Miller and Alyson gives her best performance
The title says it all. This is an interesting but somewhat pedestrian biopic.
Glenn Miller (James Stewart) is a struggling trombonist. But his true love is arranging. He goes through a series of gigs but generally leaves or loses the gig because the leader does not want to use his arrangements.
Finally, Glenn gets his big break with a band but it still is not enough. His wife finally talks him into starting his own band. After a theatre owner takes a chance on The Glenn Miller Band, it become a national sensation.
When the war breaks out, Glenn volunteers and is put in charge of an Army band. But he is not happy playing the usual marches. During a parade, Glenn decides to jazz it up for a visiting General. The Miller proposes that he form his band and take it on tour to entertain the troupes in Europe. The tour is a resounding success and brings needed moral to the troops. Of course, we all know that Miller was killed in a plane crash during the war. But his music lives on.
The first half of the film is okay but it really doesn't come to life until after the band if formed and we get to hear all the great music. Stewart, as always, gives a great performance and is very believable as Miller. June Allyson gives one of her best performances here and she doesn't sing a note in the film. Harry Morgan plays Miller's best friend. There are also appearances by jazz greats Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa.
This is a film for Glenn Miller fans.
