The Porn Star Next Door...with a Heart of Gold?
I was quite pleasantly surprised by this one. It was excellent! Funny, when I saw the previews on television, for many weeks, I kept thinking: this really reminds me of the movie Risky Business. I never saw it in the theaters.
I enjoyed how this movie was set up: very unique to make the "nerd" a President of the school. I always remember the president of my schools being the "cool" kids. Emile is the president, but hangs with some wanabee cool kids, who don't quite fit in with the jocks, etc.
Of course Emile Hirsch is very attractive, which helps move the story on, so the nerd image only holds for a little bit. Elisha Cuthbet is also excellent as the girl next door, and potential girlfriend of our hero, the Hirsch character.
I like Emile's buddies, and they also help to carry the story. I enjoyed the "road trip" to Vegas to attend the Porn convention, and that has been one of my regular fantasies to attend that show, so it was cool seeing it (or at least the movie version.) I wonder how many extras were actually porn stars?
I really noticed how many similarities there are between this movie and Risky Business. I didn't read every review, but nobody that I read, gave all the similarities, so I thought that might be a unique approach. So here are the similarities that I found. I guess you might consider them homage to the original.
Risky Business featured a unique non-vocal soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, that featured prominently in the movie, especially the sex scenes (remember "making love on a real train?") A small clip of this exact music played during the scene when the friends of the Cuthbet character (other porn stars) are being introduced to the parents of the Hirsch character, when pictures are being taken before they go to the prom.
Both movies involve the male character being tricked and seduced in various ways (Tom Cruise has his parent's car dropped in Lake Michigan; The Emile Hirsch character "loses" his clothes, and again finds himself naked, in his principal's pool.)
Both male characters end up "recruiting" the ladies of the night, to help settle a huge debt. (Tom hires the prostitutes, Emile hires the Porn actresses.)
Both movies feature somewhat clueless friends of the main male character, who give him poor advice, and move him in a direction of complete failure to fix the problems.
Both feature mean-spirited but knowledgeable "pimp" type managers. Timothy Olyphant, one of my favorite characters, and a former classmate from my high school, really gives new meaning to the expression "low-life." (I promise, he's really a nice guy, take it from me.) While we never performed in any high-school plays together, he and his brother were quite the athletes, especially down at USC in his younger days. (I'm quite certain his brother was a tennis ace in our hometown of Modesto, California, and later in college at USC.)
I'm sure there are many other similarities, but that's what I noticed.
All in all, I highly recommend this one to any age older than 17. It was a great movie! Two Thumbs Up!!!
good
i don't know if there is much to say, this movie is good.
cut throught all the BS of long reviews this movie is funny and sexy
Porn fantasy?
I watched this film because I know one of the actors who played a minor character. He did fine in his little part, but what a terrible movie! Believe me, this is not anywhere near as good or funny as Risky Business or American Pie, two fine and original teenage sexual comedies. None of the major characters is interesting, likable, or funny, and neither are any of the prudish grownups. It's more like a twisted teenage version of Pretty Woman, in which a serious and proper high school valedictorian "saves" a gorgeous teenage porn star - and manages to get filthy rich in the process! I can forgive a lot if it were at least funny. I hope my friend gets to act in better movies.
