Ladies and gentlemen, the ULTIMATE MTV MOVIE... FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff.
You heard me right. I figure the only way Rob Cohen could have made this any more MTV-ish would be to give Ja Rule an on-screen cameo, which he did. Hackneyed editing, frantic cinematography, bright colors, young actors, hot girls and a blazin' hip-hop soundtrack solidify this film as a generation Xer's dream come true. Is it a great movie? Hardly. Is it entertaining? Oh, you betcha.

Paul Walker stars as a pretty boy undercover cop who infiltrates Vin Diesel's gang of street racers to get to the bottom of a series of truck robberies. Along the way, he falls for Jordana Brewster, who just so happens to be Vin Diesel's little sister, and is told by Vin, "You break her heart, I'll break your neck."
Yikes. But while the plot may be a little tired and cliche, it's not what keeps you engrossed. It's the cars. This is by far the "fastest" movie I've ever seen, so the title of the film isn't any kind of understatement. And after watching this, you'll want to fire up your beat up Neon and punch it to 120 on the freeway. I know I wanted to.

The four stars of this movie have already been featured in movies before, so don't expect to find any breakthrough performances here. However, this is the film which made them Hollywood superstars ala "the Fast and the Furious" becoming the sleeper hit of the year. Paul Walker turns in an okay performance as the hero cop with a confused sense of morality. Vin Diesel is... Vin Diesel as the anti-hero. Don't hold your breath for any lifetime achievement awards in the future for this guy. Jordana Brewster turns in a pretty good performance, though. But it's Michelle Rodriguez, a sexy chick with a lot of spunk, who steals the movie. Ted Levine of "Buffalo Bill" fame also makes an appearance as Walker's superior officer, who heroically won't let Walker smoke a cigarette. Yup, that's the gist of it.

I'd recommend buying this DVD because it looks great, sounds great and has a plethora of bonus features. The film itself won't ever win any major awards (except for maybe the MTV movie of the year award), but it's probably one of the most entertaining films I've seen all year. When the sequel hits theaters, I'll check that out as well.

Fairly Cool Point Break Ripoff FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
If The Fast & The Furious were a book, the makers of Point Break could sue for plagarism. Point Break was abt surfing. This is abt street racing. Other than the different cool sport and little details here and there, they are basically the same movie. An incompent, immature, immoral and smartmouthed rookie FBI agent gets assigned to infiltrate a world of village idiots and discover who the criminal village idiots are. He seems to forget he's supposed to be bad guy hunting, not hot babe hunting. That the FBI and cops seem to be having so much trouble figuring out this mensa stumper should cause serious concern to anyone who takes any of this silly movie seriously. The 3 stars are mostly style points for the cars, clothes, Vin and the soundtrack.

Still Another 'B' Movie With an 'A" Budget FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
The Fast and the Furious is a good example of a trend that is fashionable in Hollywood these days -- taking a grade 'B' concept, idea or script and dressing it up as a grade 'A' movie. ...The movie revolves around the latest craze in street racing. Young people are taking the lowliest cars, such as Honda Civics, and converting them into lean, mean street machines. These vehicles are incredibly fast, their power often enhanced by nitrous oxide injectors. They look to be both dangerous and expensive, but that's a lot of their appeal. Frankly, I'd like to drive one myself.

The movie opens with a bang, a visual adrenaline / testosterone combo rush in which several guys and a girl in supercharged little black cars attack and rob a semi truck as it roars down an interstate highway. The scene reminds me of the old Westerns where robbers attacked a moving stagecoach. It's a silly scene because it's so obviously impossible, but it's also totally exhilarating to watch. In real life, if you absolutely must rob a semi, try one that's parked.

The plot involves a not-so-bright ...[man] named Brian [Paul Walker] who infiltrates a group of street racers led by the charismatic Dominic [Vin Diesel]. The group may or may not be the thieves. Along the way, Brian must prove his worth as a racer, and these scenes involve some rather amazing races along the streets of LA. He also manages to fall in love with Dominic's sister, Mia [Jordana Brewster]. Incidentally, the plot seems ...

Vin Diesel dominates the cast. He was also appealing in two movies in 2000, Pitch Black and Boiler Room. He is probably our next great action star. Paul Walker, who sounds like Keanu Reeves and looks like the young Rob Lowe, makes a good white bread kind of hero. Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez are great to look at, but this is a guy flick, so it's hard to gauge their acting skills here.

The Fast and the Furious is one of the most visually interesting movies of 2001. Director Rob Cohen keeps everything, well, fast and furious. The movie is in constant movement. The photography is outstanding. The colors and lighting create an LA that is appropriately dreamlike, since we know that all the things we are seeing could only really happen in a movie. This is street racing and crime as a fantasy.

This movie may be all style and no substance. It's a guilty pleasure, trash mixd with class....
