The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen) Reviews
What a wonderful day for an exorcism
There is no doubt this film had it's moments when it was first released to the public in 1973 but the shock value has gone way down with time; and with the advent of the internet and advances in science this is nothing more then gory fun with the scare factor pushed up a notch or two. What fuels this film is the supposed fact that it was "based on a true story." Well, if one does the research and reads the account thoroughly one will see many doubters including priests which would claim that the boy in question wasn't exactly possessed in the sense of the word. There is a brilliant expose about the whole thing written by a journalist who actually tracked the boy (now a man) down and tried to interview him but he refused to co-operate. Many of the phenomena that took place during his so called possession were easily explained away coupled with the fact the boy was quite the prankster.
The Exorcist is a great story which will affect you for a brief time mainly because the location where all the story takes place is in a house thus suggesting that this could happen to your family. It uses psychology to make its mark and it succeeds quite well. Knock offs after knock offs have tried to capitalize on this plotline but none have come close. Part II was a joke, Part III a bore and the prequels while interesting hardly delivered. On its own Possession/exorcism is quite an interesting topic but if this is an irrefutable phenomenon why haven't we seen a genuine case being reported about recently. Sure there are dozens of books about like "Hostage to the Devil" "True accounts of Exorcism" and alike but upon reading all these one gets merely a third hand account of things. 20/20 had presented an alleged exorcism on camera but one could tell the girl in question was faking it. She would often smile at the camera when she thought she was in the clear. A book entitled "Exorcisms, expelling demons in the land of plenty" reports that despite witnessing over fifty exorcisms, the author can undoubtedly claim there was nothing supernatural about any of them. Another thing one has to ask, is this the best the devil can do? Why not take over an entire nation and get world war III going?
Upon viewing the film again I started to realize how slow it was, how humorous some of the lines were and how absurd it all was. Neither the book nor the film explains why Regan becomes possessed, how does a spirit get from Iraq to Washington anyway, did it want to see the sites and needed a body to inhabit?
When has peeing on a carpet become scary?
Possessed or not if one turns ones head around that is it, game over. Profanity? Have you checked out cable TV lately?
In the end, the movie does make you think but you should be more afraid of your imagination for that is what the film truly targets afterwards. For those who believe without a doubt, such things are true then take comfort that there are forces to combat them. Bladdy has written a great story but don't' forget he also had to promote his book and film in the end and thus used anything he could find to do so. When he read about the 1949 case and got his inspiration it provided an excellent springboard for him. Personally I would categorize Possession/exorcism under the same vane as I do Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. My out of the blue theory is that, possession is like another mental disorder, one believes they have been invaded by spirits thus when the ritual is performed one believes they have been cured; it is all in the Mind.
A+ due to the fact it's a classic I would rate it B- today.
Greatest Movie Ever
Yes I said it The exorcist is the best movie ever not just best horror movie but best movie. This movie is great from begining to the end. Linda Blair did a very good job as the possed girl Regan. Of course their are some cheesy scenes but don't forget this was made in the early 1970's. Every actor was terrific and that mad the movie even better. This movie made my friend and cousins leave the room and go watch something else it was so scary. If you don't have this movie you don't have horror.
