The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Vol. 1: (A Scandal in Bohemia/ The Dancing Men/ The Naval Treaty/ The Solitary Cyclist) Reviews
We love it
Every once in a while, an actor comes along who not only plays the role of Sherlock Holmes, but actually redefines the role. In 1984, veteran actor Jeremy Brett (1933-95) actually did it yet again! And now, these wonderful Granada Television episodes are available on DVD.
This wonderful DVD has no less than four of the 55 minute episodes! My family and I loved this DVD, and think that any fan of Sherlock Holmes, or just plain fan of mysteries, will love it, too! (By the way, if you like Jeremy Brett, you can see him in an entirely different role in My Fair Lady (1964) as Freddie Eynsford-Hill!)
The following episodes are included on this DVD:
A Scandal in Bohemia - Series 1, episode 1 (April 24, 1984) - When Sherlock Holmes is approached by a mysterious, masked stranger, it is the beginning of a case that pits him against "that woman."
The Dancing Men - Series 1, episode 2 (May 1, 1984) - When a young wife acts frightened by a series of pictures of dancing stick-men, her husband turns to the great detective. But, the dancing men hold a secret that is both sinister and deadly!
The Naval Treaty - Series 1, episode 3 (May 8, 1984) - A naval treaty was stolen right out from under the nose of one of Watson's old school chums, and its publication could bring down the government. Where is the stolen treaty hidden? Only Sherlock Holmes can find out.
The Solitary Cyclist - Series 1, episode 4 (May 15, 1984) - A young lady approaches Sherlock Holmes with an unlikely story, every time she goes on a bicycle ride, she is followed by a sinister-looking man. Quickly, Holmes realizes that the young lady is in peril.
"It is my business to know what other people don't know"

This DVD presents four of the first fifty-minute Sherlock Holmes' episodes that had Jeremy Brett as Sherlock and David Burke as Dr. Watson. Each episode is based on a story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 to 1930) who wrote 56 short stories and four novels about Sherlock Holmes.
Three of these four programs mention Holmes' drug problem with heroine and/or cocaine.
(1) "The Scandal in Bohemia" (12 scenes; based on the 1891 story).
A masked man asks Sherlock to recover an incriminating photograph that was taken with a woman who now possesses it. In his attempt to recover this photo, this woman sees through Holmes' "smoke screen."
(2) "The Dancing Men" (12 scenes; based on the 1903 story; my personal favorite of the four episodes).
Sherlock must crack the code of "a chorus line" of dancing men drawings in order to solve a crime.
(3) "The Naval Treaty" (13 scenes; based on the 1893 story).
Watson's old school buddy asks Sherlock for help when he "loses" a secret treaty entrusted to him.
(4) "The Solitary Cyclist" (12 scenes; based on the 1903 story).
A woman bicyclist asks Holmes to find out why she's being followed by a male bicyclist. You can check out Sherlock's boxing style in this episode!
Brett (who made 41 Sherlock Holmes dramas between 1984 and 1994) is in top-form in all of these four episodes since they were made before the time of his health problems. He captures the essence of the famous gumshoe in his performances.
The costumes, background music, and cinematography are quite well done. There is, however, some minor sound problems with episode three.
Finally, this DVD has four extras. As a first time viewer, I found all of these interesting. (This is where I got the above quotation by Sherlock that titles this review.)
In conclusion, be sure to view this DVD and see why it won the 1988 Swedish Academy of Detection Award!!
