FINALLY!
I love the great movies of the 80's and it's a real treat to find some of the giants of the era finally getting released on DVD. The Indiana Jones trilogy was a defining cinematic event of the 80's and spanned nearly the entire decade. Along with Rambo, Robocop and many other big titles that became household words with entire franchises built around them. Just hearing the classic theme music from the trilogy will trigger memories, and that classic indiana jones hat is instanly recognizable.
The entire Trilogy is great. Harison Ford plays Dr Indiana Jones, an edventurer/archaeologist who gets himself in some pretty amazing situations. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was the first movie (released I believe in 1982) th film was the brain child of Stevel Spielberg (the great director) and George Lucas (Creator of Star Wars). The movie practically defined the adventure movie genre, with lots of cliffhanger scenes, suspence and action, all while staying light-hearted and humorous.
"Temple of Doom" was the second film of the three, and was slightly darker than the other two, while the final movie has indiana searching for the Holy Grail (released in 89) with his long lost father. From fighting Nazi's to running from giant bolders, the action kept audiences of the time on the edge of thier seats. Each movie has more than one scene which will stick in your mind forever as just unforgettable (IE the scene where jones shoots the guy with the sword).
The whole trilogy had a lot of style too. The 2nd and third movie made many referrences back to the first two (indiana's fear of snakes, the sword guy getting shot scene was spoofed in the second movie etc). The movies all had a lot of character and charm I guess you could say.
All 3 movies are perfectly remastered for DVD, picture wuality and sound are excellent. Also we are treated to a bunch of bonus material - in fact, a whole DVD's worth of it! Including a 50 minute documentary for EACH film and a bunch more stuff. Not only that but I was so happy to see that this trilogy (like the rambo and back to the future trilogies) were released in both widescreen AND FULL SCREEN formats! This edition being fullscreen, so those of us not planning on buying widescreen tvs this decade, wont have to stare at the black bars! Unfortunatley, unlike the rambo trilogy, you must buy one edition or the other (Rambo included both widescreen AND fullscreen editions together in one set - whic really is the best value).
Still this release is excellent in every sense of the word and the movies themselves are americana at is's best. They will always remain part of pop culture and the public love for all three films wont die out any time soon.
The Adventures of Indiana Jones DVD Box Set is truly great!
The Adventures of Indiana Jones DVD Box Set includes all three films: Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. You also get a Bonus Disc with over 3 hours of bonus materials such as: A new feature-length documentary of the making of the trilogy From the Lucasfilm Archives, The Stunts of Indiana Jones, The Sound of Indiana Jones, The Music of Indiana Jones, The Light and Magic of Indiana Jones, Original trailers, Weblink to exclusive content including dozens of behind-the-scenes photos, an animatic sequence from Raiders, and a PC game preview. What is best about this collection is that all three films are in their original format, but are restored and digitally remastered frame by frame giving the best possible picture quality that these films have ever been seen in. The picture quality is so good that it makes you feel like you are watching a movie that was made not to long ago no matter what size of TV screen you are watching this collection on. The sound is now presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital, which gives even more new life in to each of these films. I can say that The Adventures of Indiana Jones DVD Box Set is a wonderful edition to any fan, or movie collectors collection. I could not ask for a better Christmas gift.
classic trilogy finally available on dvd
Finally, Indiana Jones has been released to DVD. I'm sure a lot of movie lovers have been awaiting for this as much as the original Star Wars trilogy. First reviews of the films themselves.
Raiders : (10/10). A true movie classic. Harrison Ford added another iconic role to his pedestal along with Han Solo. Every scene in the film, from the classic opening prologue to the opening of the Ark is thrilling. Jones is sent by the US government to stop the Nazi's from recovering the Ark of the Covenant. Karen Allen, as Marion Ravenwood remains THE Indy heroine and Paul Freeman is great as the slimy Belloq. John Rhys-Davies and Denholm Elliot are great support as Sallah and Marcus Brody. They even return for the third movie. Not much more to say here that hasn't been said before.
Temple of Doom: (8 1/2 /10). Not up to Raiders, but still a great, underrated movie. Come on people, this was a great movie!I've always found the constant bashing and dislike for this film to be ridiculous. Some of Indiana Jones's best moments are in this film, such as the minecar chase, voodoo doll fight, spiked room and the final scene on the bridge. True, Kate Capshaw's character, Willie Scott is irritating but the movie has a lot of strengths to make up for her constant screaming. Short Round is amusing and Molaram is a great villain.
For all you haters of the movie; buy the used dvds of Raiders and Crusade somewhere such as E-Bay or a video store. It's not like Temple was THAT bad. Grow up and get a life people, you sound like a bunch of whiny 5-year old kids.
Last Crusade: (9/10). The opening scene with the late River Phoenix as the young Indy is an exciting opening scene. It's nice to learn about Indy's origins this time around as well. Sean Connery's addition to the series was a great idea. The father-son relationship between Ford and Connery is memorable and adds humor and drama to the movie. In fact, Connery's presence is what keeps Crusade from being a sort of-retread of Raiders. This movie is a little too similar to Raiders such as involving Indy racing the Nazi's to find an artifact,Indy meeting up with somebody he has been estranged with, both take place in deserts, similar ending, etc. Also, the Nazi villains this time, while adequate, aren't memorable. They feel like recycled versions of the Nazi's in Raiders. Still, Crusade was a great third installment to a wonderful trilogy.
Bonus Disc: The interviews and makings of- were fun to watch but there should have been more on this disc. Such as deleted scenes. The Godfather and Back to the Future dvd sets had plethoras of bonus material. The lack of bonus material on the set might leave one unsatisfied.
I hope Lucas will bring out the other great trilogy of his on dvd soon.
Hopefully, Indiana Jones 4 will be awesome.
