Soundtrack Master - Mr. Dave Gruisin
Forget about the great movie for now and let's give credit to the great soundtrack that gives the movie its stylish southern California flair. I'm not referring to the rock and pop tracks but to the background music and the Dave Gruisin song on the soundtrack called "Jo Ann's Song". This was the track played during the steamy hot tub scene and added to the overall sensuality of the movie. Great sax riffs by David Sanborn! That song remains number one on my list of seduction tunes...
Revel in the trashy shamelessness with me
I rent this movie ever so often just to luxuriate in the smaltzy Dave Grusin soundtrack and the beautiful eyes of all the leads-Mel Gibson, Michelle Pheiffer and Kurt Russell. The chemistry between the trio is palapable and there are some wonderful moments such as when Russell helps Pheiffer's cook get out of drunk driving charge and when Mel finally makes the big move on Pheiffer in the hot tub. Overall the plot with Gibson's character as a reformed drug dealer is pretty lame, especially the last third of the movie when Raul Julia shows up?? However, that is what the fast forward button is for!! I believe Mel used a body double during the love scene in the hot tub so if you feel as cheated as I did, just remember it is really his bare tush in Lethal Weapon and he is breathtakingly beautiful in his blue bikini in Tim!
Ain't Love Grand?
Though I cannot deny that it is unbelievably cheesy, filled with practically every cliche one can imagine and contains tons of embarrassing dialogue (especially Kurt Russell's begging speech) and unconvincing love scenes (Mel, will you please kiss her like you mean it and stop squirming!), I LOVE this movie. It satisfies the romantic in my soul. Michelle Pfeiffer, J. T. Walsh and Raul Julia make it worthwhile. My favorite scene is when the former drug dealer, Mac, tells Jo Ann why he hired her lawyer, Andy, as his lawyer and why he felt he needed a veneer of respectability. Pure Magic! Don't you love it when a man will reform for the love of a woman?
No, it never will be a classic, but I enjoy it all the same.
