Science fiction is only half the appeal
If this trilogy were only to be judged on the original breakthroughs it made in science fiction film, especially space film, and its appeal to children, it would be a solid, yet only average trilogy.
What allows Star Wars to rise a bit ahead of the pack is the multidimensional and believable human story that underlies the grand saga. Luke's story is a touching coming of age tale, and despite the many differences between his world and ours we identify with his desire for adventure, his youthful awe of ancient wisdom, and his struggle to expand his spiritual self. Unlike many science fiction worlds this one struggles with a theme familiar to ourselves: the survival of religion and faith in a world of science. In a way it is also a period piece of contemporary America, if one sees the Soviet Union as the "evil empire". Finally, the relevations and unfolding of the plot are truly shocking and will keep this trilogy alive in the popular consciousness for decades to come. The only flaw comes in the final installment, Return of the Jedi, which foreshadows some of Hollywood's later reliance on overwhelming battle scenes as a replacement for storytelling magic.
Overall though, still a solid legacy and to this day it's a bit underrated.
the dark side clouds EVERYTHING
Lucas continues to amaze his loyal fans with constant modifications to the original trilogies...wow George you've done it again...don't waste your time with this garbage...hey George, put the ORIGINAL trilogy released in theater on dvd...not your messed up, twisted, dark side modifications on dvd. Lucas doesn't care about the loyal fans of the original trilogy - that much is clear...the dark side surrounds Lucas...beware of the dark side! don't give in to hate...that can lead to the dark side of the Force! If I had an option to give this travesty a zero or even negative stars I would...I'll stick with my original VHS tapes and ignore these pieces of trash DVDs.
CGI "Song and dance number" Uuuugh!!!!
One major reason I will not buy the Star Wars Trilogy is because of the added CGI "song and dance number" scene at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. IT IS SO OBNOXIOUS!!! I just can't stand it! Makes me sick! Cartoonish and tasteless. Its low esthetic and technical quality stands in harsh contrast to the rest of this excellent scene. Most frustrating!
I like a few of the added CGI scenes, like the big creatures the javas ride in Mos Eisley. But the bad ones like above really pull everything down.
I will wait around and hope for a better updated version.
